Since the smartphone craze, I've seen the quality of social gatherings or just the simple act of sitting next to someone and getting to know them...decline. Smartphones cheapen social gatherings and provide an easy escape rather than forcing people to think on their feet and learn about others. I've seen friends and family get addicted and become more and more anti-social. Worse, these habits tend to distract them from exponentially more pressing real life matters and seize up a lot of time. It also shifts people away from reading books and towards reading the internet, texting, or playing games. I find the term 'social media' to be not really social, but rather anti-social.
