"The mismeasure of man" is an interesting book.

Yep, I remember that.  To my understanding, the "blank slate's" historical origins are from the rise of the pseudo-scientific psychologists (Freud,  Jung, etc.) in the late 19th century coupled with the rise of existential philosophers of that time period.  The strong form of "blank slate" dates as far back as Karl Marx's revolutionary writings and is a pillar of Das Kapital.  I remember reading the papers, text and being quite stunned that he used this as a pillar of the ideology.  It makes sense of course, why progressive movements generations later would cling a bit on it.  Communism is long gone, but a faint shadow of Marxian thinking and unconscious impressions of the 'new socialist man' as the next stage of human consciousness still remains.   The blank slate underwrites the hope that human beings are not "chained to their genetic programming" but can fully liberate themselves based on their free will.  The philosophy of fat acceptance is just another..countless..iteration of this.

For what it's worth, and I have no interest in restarting the debate, I never made a claim that humans were a blank slate and that biology or psychology had no role in anything. I have not read Gould's book, but nothing in the Wiki summary suggests a conclusion I immediately disagree with.

My politics are informed by history (and 19th-century Marxist authors' understanding of earlier history has always been bad, and I don't share it), not my opinion on the nature of human consciousness.

^ Dude you went all out.

"Evo psych is full of shit" is not "biology and psychology play no role," dude

But this is getting way beyond the specific issue and spiraling into one of them pointless academic arguments. So mercifully for everyone, I have to get to campus.

I'm OK with Ashley on the cover.

BUT

This is forum discussing swimsuit models, not the policy planning section of the National Ethics Committee.

We get that you have a knack for high-falutin' discourses but the place for that is Grad School.

Everyone's joking around and the mirth makes this such a great thread.

So chill out, dude

Relax man, I get it. Edited my reply to show that the conversation is getting way too academic (in all senses of the term) for this thread, and it is.

Time for all of us to move on. I'd be happy to continue elsewhere if anyone else wants to, though.

I'd like to add just one thing - the "blank slate" theory pre-existed, eg. John Locke.

Good point, according to wiki the earliest appearance in the west is from Aristotle.  Although it's strongest influence came with the rise of communism.

This is one of the worst rookie classes in years.

Bo is the new Emily Ratajkowski, but a poor substitute.  (BTW, MJ, when guys say they like a girl with curves, THIS is what they're talking about.)  But I swear she has the absolute dumbest look in her eyes.

Babs is the new Erin.  I do not get it at all.  Meh body, meh face, meh poses.  And there are at least 30 pages of :chicken: in this thread for her?

Sofia is the new Lily (that said, I prefer Sofia, but wouldn't miss either of them)

Tanya is the new Irina (that said, I prefer Tanya, but wouldn't miss either of them)

Could you ever imagine ANY of these girls actually warranting a cover?  If not, what are they doing there?

Which reminds me: Ashley is rookie of the year by default.  No way will MJ give it to anyone else.

They had a FANTASTIC group of casting calls this year.  You could have thrown darts at that list and ended up with at least a pretty good group of models.  And yet this is what they arrived at?  Shanina and Danielle are passed over??  Some of their best prospects are relegated to a model search, where only one will make it??

MJ is the first editor who didn't come from the world of fashion and boy oh boy does it ever show.

I took a quick look at the pictures because I'm at work but I think my early favorites are Nina (where are her swimsuits lolool), the Hannahs especially Ferguson, Hailey, Barbara and surprisingly Ms. Kate Bock, and there is Chrissy in all her awesomeness.

I also noticed less retouching on the bodies? Some of the faces clearly got some work done but is much better than previous years.

Will formulate a proper opinion once i'm home.
