I would be mad as hell if I was a parent whose child was at that school! In the eyes of the law, she has paid her debt to society but that still doesn’t mean that officials are in the right when they take the position that Karla should be treated like everyone else! Quote
PrettyDeadThings Posted June 1, 2017 Posted June 1, 2017 12 years getting her ass kissed, three square meals a day, access to the internet/tv, workout yard, health care, and books does not equal punishment and it sure as hell doesn't make up for the murders. They should of gassed the bitch and saved the tax payers a considerable amount of money. There isn't a reform for Serial Killers, and this woman now has kids of her own? Are you fucking kidding me?! One day her kids are going to google her out of curiosity and see that Mommy and her Boyfriend raped and murdered their aunt along with a couple other girls... Yeah that's not going to be traumatizing for them at all. Quote
Sanni Posted June 1, 2017 Posted June 1, 2017 Yep, one really has to question her “battered wife” defence. She is predatory. I also want to know what happened to Mary Bell! Apparently, she had a child. I don’t know whether that kid could ever have a normal upbringing… Quote

Yeah that's not going to be traumatizing for them at all. Don't you love my country Muffin? Our whole judicial system and court system is fucked sentencing in-tow From The Star: Quote The Truth in Sentencing Act — one of the government’s early “tough-on-crime” laws passed in 2009 — curbs judges’ ability to give a break on sentencing when a convicted offender has spent lengthy time in pre-trial jail custody. The sentencing “discount” had evolved to recognize that pre-trial custody in a remand jail is hard time, in overcrowded conditions with no access to treatment or rehabilitative programs. It is also “dead time” that doesn’t count toward any eventual parole or early release eligibility. The Criminal Code allowed sentence credits of 2-to-1 for each day in pre-trial custody, sometimes even rising to 3-to-1 in exceptional circumstances. But the federal Conservatives argued the justice system had become too soft on criminals at the expense of victims. They knocked the credit down to a day-for-a-day, or 1-to-1. The maximum credit allowed would be only 1.5 days credit for a day served pre-sentence. In a unanimous 7-0 decision, the high court Friday agreed the law sets out a new starting point, that 1:1 is the general rule. But it said the limit could be exceeded in many cases, rising to the 1.5 -1 maximum, to reflect the fact pre-trial remand time doesn’t count toward parole or early release eligibility. Tl;dr at one point we would give "time served" for those awaiting trial 2 days for every 1 day in custody. So if your trial/pre-trial took a year and you were sentenced to three you would be eligible for parole immediately. So fucked, so happy I took law class in grade 12 Quote
Limerlight Posted June 2, 2017 Posted June 2, 2017 Statement by the Prime Minister of Canada in response to the United States’ decision to withdraw from the Paris Agreement Quote Ottawa, Ontario June 1, 2017 The Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau, today issued the following statement in response to the United States’ decision to withdraw from the Paris Agreement: “We are deeply disappointed that the United States federal government has decided to withdraw from the Paris Agreement. Canada is unwavering in our commitment to fight climate change and support clean economic growth. Canadians know we need to take decisive and collective action to tackle the many harsh realities of our changing climate. “While the U.S. decision is disheartening, we remain inspired by the growing momentum around the world to combat climate change and transition to clean growth economies. We are proud that Canada stands united with all the other parties that support the Agreement. We will continue to work with our domestic and international partners to drive progress on one of the greatest challenges we face as a world. “This is not only about the huge economic opportunities of clean growth and the need to address the pressing threats of climate change. This is about an ambitious and unshakeable desire to leave a cleaner, healthier and more sustainable planet for our kids and for generations to come. “We are all custodians of this world, and that is why Canada will continue to work with the U.S. at the state level, and with other U.S. stakeholders, to address climate change and promote clean growth. We will also continue to reach out to the U.S. federal government to discuss this matter of critical importance for all humankind, and to identify areas of shared interest for collaboration, including on emissions reductions.” PM I need votes at his best Quote

She's a grandmother now but she petitioned the courts to have her daughter's anonymity protected for life, rather just the 18 years so it's harder to find information. Mary Bell kept her history from her daughter, until a newpaper found out they were in town and it was all released. Quote

I read that the anonymity of her grandchild is protected as well. Hopefully, she was able to be a good mother for her child but it seems unlikely that one could ever fully come back from the things that she did. On the other hand, she was a child when she committed her crimes so maybe there was a possibility for rehabilitation. Sort of like in the “Child of Rage” documentary? Quote

In the podcast they talked a lot about her childhood, and the abuse she suffered (both mentally and physically) and while I definitely don't think that excuses any of her actions, I do think rehabilitation from the effects of that is possible, particularly because she was still a child. In case it's something you're interested in, the podcast is called My Favourite Murder, and each episode they talk about two different serial killers, or "interesting" murders. It's listed as a comedy podcast, so it's not really deep diving or extremely fact heavy like some true crime podcasts, but I find it gives a good overview so you get an idea of the case, and it's a little easier to digest because they keep it a little more "upbeat." Some people do find the podcast insensitive because they do crack jokes and whatnot while talking about some pretty horrific stuff, so that's a warning if that tone might upset you. (They never make light of the victims or their situation, but I can understand why people would possibly be bothered.) Quote

Thank you for the tip! The pain she felt, she inflicted on others so maybe therapy helped her to get some tools to deal with her anger. But she was known as a bully, no one liked her so she hung out with a girl (her partner in crime) who wasn’t all there mentally, and she was manipulative and enjoyed the hurt she caused others. So, I’m not sure she was able to grow up to be a normal loving mother who is not cold or scary or uncaring towards her child. In the case of James Bulgar, the child killers seem to have not been fully rehabilitated. On the other hand, it wasn’t discovered that they had suffered the kind of abuse that Mary Bell had. So, there isn’t much of an explanation for what they did. Quote
