'Can't wait to see that lol

Merkel doesn't want to militarize. Why would she want to spend money from her budget she can now spend on other (more electorally interesting) things on the German army, when it isn't necessary? This change of stance is a logical consequence of Trump's refusal to commit to article V of NATO. Basically after that, Germany's two choices are to either increase their defense budget or allow Russia to push them around whenever they choose.

I think Merkel was actually referecing to the hypothetical EU military selfdefense. Let's face it, Merkel will need France for that lol

For exemple, if Merkel wants to continue to enjoy of the French nuclear umbrella, she should allow us to take some freedom on our budget. I'm thinking about the 2% of deficit.

*Shrugs* It was always going to happen and we are past the point of no return anyway when it comes to stopping climate change.

This guy is a criminal.

I am pretty sure a city like NY or the California state are going to respect the deal despite of this moron.

Climate Change in the West and its politics, from a global perspective, is largely trival  unless India and China (1/3rds of the world's population) decide to never industrialize any further and force most of their people to live in 3rd world conditions

I've been studying the presidency of LBJ for the past couple of months and what this presidency shows most significantly is the potential of the presidency from seizing maximum power in Washington.  LBJ's influence in his 5 years as president was only rivaled by FDR and his domestic legislation exceeded his by 40% in scale and far more in scope.  The 89th Congress was the most productive legislative period in US history.  His presidency was one of gigantic projection of state power, with massive successes, some failures, and a massive failure (attempting to win the war in Vietnam)

In the case of LBJ, it required a decade in the House (and earning the influence and loyalty of the House speaker) and then 12 years of unprecedented success in the Senate ( tirelessly accumulating knowledge and influence, and re-aligning coalitions as Senate leader for 8 years) to come into the presidency with unparalleled expertise.  This was interrupted by 3 years of power loss/bleeding as Vice President, but it served as an 'internship' for the presidency in other ways.   Once LBJ became president he fired from all cylinders for the next three years and was a president that dominated Congress.

Caro's "The Passage of Power" covers LBJ's first 47 days in office and the effectiveness of LBJ is a foil to weakness and bumbling of Trump.  He had major legislation passed (included a Civil Rights bill and a Tax cut) that JFK couldn't pass in 3 years.  LBJ's first actions as president was to negotiate, threaten, and persuade media across the country to facilitate his goals and shut down damaging investigative journalist/GOP offensives against him over the web of corruption he needed to traverse to secure his rise to power.  This is something that Trump has clearly not succeeded in doing   LBJ was famous for knowing every major reporter in Washington and coordinated his actions with the owner of the Washington Post.

So far the Trump presidency is looking to be a  weak president, like all those forgotten presidents in US history that served little more than being a filibuster against further accumulation of state power.

Have you been a naughty boy, Nigel?

Perhaps he will appreciate his MEP lifestyle a bit more if he ends up in a pound-your-ass federal slammer. :ninja:

You know the world has taken a wrong turn somewhere when the news that a corrupt ex-Wall Street investment banker (now the political equivalent of Mrs Brown's Boys) is a person of interest in an FBI investigation comes as a surprise.

The best part of "business as usual" was when Jamie Dimon, CEO of JP Morgan,  was presented as the "Hero Banker" and "Obama's favorite banker"  to put a friendly face on the WS bailout.  This is largely due to the fact that the bank is aligned with the Democrats, and it suffered fewer losses than the other global investment banks, which were more corrupt than it was.

A change of guard as it were, at least at the level of rhetoric

Quote

China tells Donald Trump there is an 'international responsibility' to act over climate change

'Fighting climate change is a global consensus, it's not invented by China'

Mr Li did not mention the US or Donald Trump, but his comments were obviously addressed to Washington.

He said China had "in recent years has stayed true to its commitment" to address the issue – a hint that the US would pay a diplomatic price for signing up to an international agreement, then abandoning it.

Beijing had also been "actively promoting the Paris Agreement and we were one of the first countries to ratify the Paris agreement", Mr Li added.

He appeared to reference a past claim by Mr Trump that climate change was a "hoax" perpetrated by China.
