Hard not to feel for Gladbach though. Last year they were placed in a group with Juventus, Sevilla and Man City. This year it's City again and Barca. Guardiola's record against them for Bayern was strangely poor, but still, what a tough break.
  2. In all seriousness though, it's great to see the birthday list back.

I was quite interested to go at the time, but given Ridley Scott's output being somewhat less than impressive of late, I thought I'd hold off for a while. When I finally saw it, I kicked myself for not giving it a shot sooner. Loved the fact that it didn't need a pantomime villain or aliens or everything going hideously wrong to deliver something really gripping.

Mackenzie Davis (born April 1, 1987) is a Canadian actress. She made her film debut in Smashed, and later appeared in Breathe In, That Awkward Moment, and The F Word, for the latter of which she received a Canadian Screen Award nomination. She currently stars as computer programmer Cameron Howe in the TV series Halt and Catch Fire. Davis was born in Vancouver, British Columbia. She attended McGill University in Montreal, Quebec. She went on to study acting at the Neighborhood Playhouse in New York City, and was soon discovered by Drake Doremus for her acting debut in the feature film Breathe In. In 2015, she appeared in The Martian as NASA engineer Mindy Park. In June 2016, Davis was cast in an undisclosed role in the Blade Runner sequel.

Quite an intriguing set-up in Group B there, any one of Benfica, Napoli, Besiktas or Dynamo could conceivably end up topping it. Spurs, Arsenal and Leicester got off pretty lightly, but are all capable of screwing up at any given time. I see Chelsea managed to avoid all the big teams as well.

Honestly, the whole thing was tedious enough when Harry used to lean out of his Range Rover declaring that no deals would be done before making the inevitable signings of Niko Kranjcar and Peter Crouch, but some of the stuff on Wednesday really made me cringe. I've come to suspect that even Jim White realises what a load of old nonsense it is. These days, although he's aware that whipping himself into a frenzy over Halifax loaning somebody out to Forest Green is the only niche still available to him at Sky, you can almost see his eyes saying 'help me'.

What a pity Rubin Kazan can’t see the hand gestures I’m making at them right now. Sunderland seem to do transfer windows like we do Premier League seasons. Sack them off until it looks beyond us and then, when everyone has just about given up hope, we finally decide to show some urgency. There's no doubting that the squad has been left paper thin in some key areas, but I've no immediate plans to join the angry mob. In fact, I actually think we'll have the makings of a really strong side when everyone is fully fit, particularly with Kone (you can bog off as well, Everton) somehow still on board. The next four months will of course decide whether or not it's all been worthwhile, I'm just praying that we can scrape a few wins in the meantime, and that we've invested in enough cotton wool to keep Jermain Defoe wrapped up in until January.

Honestly, as much as I wanted to take the reviewers to task this time, I'm inclined to agree with a lot of their criticisms, especially on the way it was structured. The rumours of Warners cutting two versions (only one under Ayer's control) and mashing them together were probably true, because most of it was incoherent and edited to within an inch of its life, almost to the point of removing any consistent pace or tone. The silver lining for me, although I hate that they followed Harley's New 52 origins (a big departure from her original backstory and a far inferior one), was that the cast all managed to be quite entertaining in their roles. I had a real sense that the majority of the characters would have been well worth watching in a different and much better movie. Overall, I suppose what I'm trying to say is that while the structure of characterisation and plot movement were pretty disastrous, the actors, for the most part, by bringing these cool characters to life, helped make the movie more fun than it really should have been. The critics haven't fully picked up on that because in focusing mostly on editing and direction, they probably didn't allow themselves to be swept up in it as much as the average cinema goer.

I'm sure this will find an audience regardless, but they'll be hard pressed to sustain the joke for a full feature. Perhaps expect a lot of kids to end up 'accidentally' seeing it due to substandard parenting.

I finally got around to having a look. Admittedly, I could never completely dislike a movie that includes the line "I'm Neil DeGrasse Tyson, bitch" but overall, it was pretty poor. 10-15 years between connected films usually means that someone either suddenly came up with a brilliant idea or someone suddenly needed to make a house payment. This I'd say almost certainly fell into the latter category.

I don't really see how they can win, then. The reason why the burkini was first designed was to help Muslim women make that effort to integrate, and the state's response was to create a law instituting intolerance against them. All the ban will do is cause more division and create more inequality, it’s so knee-jerk that it calls into question the capacity for rational or logical thinking by those in power.
  21. Michael* replied to Stromboli1's post in a topic in General Talk
My understanding of the burkini is that it was designed as a means for Muslim women to integrate with western society by joining them at the beach and at swimming pools, where Muslim women perhaps wouldn't typically go otherwise. Not to the extent of revealing their bodies of course, but as far as sitting unaccompanied and surrounded by non-Muslims, many of whom are men. That's a move forward and one that I personally would prefer to see encouraged, not attacked. If that protest in Iran was made to challenge the culture of forcing people to wear a hijab, then it was also in response to women being dictated to by male officials. Which is exactly what's happening in this instance.
  22. Michael* replied to Stromboli1's post in a topic in General Talk
Even if we make the rather questionable assumption that nobody puts on a burkini by choice, then all this amounts to is a different group of men telling women what they can and can't wear.

Yeah, that little taster was exactly what I'd expect from Japan. If anyone knows how to put on a show, it's them. Somewhat ridiculously, because I know there are still four years to go, I've already been looking into the time difference. Tokyo is eight hours ahead of Britain, so the evening programme for the big stadium events should be on our screens from around midday onwards.

Turns out that Anna has herself a rather nice Instagram page, where on closer inspection, the family resemblance is really quite striking. Perhaps needless to say, Jac makes the occasional cameo.
