UEFA Euro 2016
That's awesome. Hopefully, the latest England debacle doesn't take anything away from Iceland's achievements at this tournament. I for one will be yelling my head off for them when they play France. Apologies in advance, @jj3.

Agreed. In our case, there's the legitimisation of xenophobia and racism, the probable break-up of the United Kingdom, the strain being placed on the Irish peace process and the coming government attacks on everything from workers' rights to the health service to think about, too. They do isolate themselves, by not taking part in the conversation. If Norway for example were in the EU then they could argue the case for regulations to be more sympathetic to their policies. They're not, so their interests will never be a priority at the top table. They're influenced by what goes on, but it's a one-way street. I'm a reasonable guy, I know there are pros and cons to both arguments. But an important debate should be based on realities, and no-one had a sensible or practical forecast of how this was all supposed to come to fruition. Let's face it, the 'Leave' campaign was built around a bunch of phantom policies that disappeared into the wind literally the morning after the results came in. They made promises that they knew fine well were unachievable, and now that we're going, the people who supported them in poorer parts of the country will be the first ones to feel the consequences.

I'm sure Joe Hart could find a way to let every single one of them in.

I'm English and even I found that hilarious. It's been a hell of a long time since we were good at football (the only people who'll call this a huge upset are the zealots who still think 1966 was last week), but that was a performance of such staggering cowardice and ineptitude. Simply amazing. Apart from Rashford, who was only on for five minutes, not a single player walks off that pitch with any credit at all.

While both survive perfectly well on their own, neither have actually saved any money through not being in the EU. Geography dictates that their main market is still Europe and as such, they still have to pay into the same system and follow the same regulations. But, since neither have a seat at the table, they have no say in what those regulations are or any way of negotiating them. I've lost track of the amount of times that I've seen the word 'sovereignty' thrown around recently, as if it's something that the UK stands to gain by leaving. Switzerland and Norway have lost theirs, and it's because they've chosen to isolate themselves.

Congrats @Stormbringer So much debate about why Argentina lost, but sometimes the simplest answer is the best one. They lost because they weren't as good as Chile, a superb unit who play the game at an insane tempo with total commitment and coordination. If I'm honest, I've a feeling Messi's retirement is a bit of a bluff, designed to strong-arm an inept federation into reform. None of this should rule him out of the ‘best ever’ conversation though, because he already is the best ever.

In the interest of making an informed decision, I actually watched this before voting. It's surprisingly well-made, but at no point did I hear if there was a better alternative to the EU, or if there was a sensible or realistic path towards making that alternative happen. And quite honestly, despite the fact that the results are in and we're already edging out the door, I still haven't. Now, we're about to enter into a negotiation in which the EU holds all the cards and we hold none.

It seems to me that a lot of people voted for change, but without stopping to think about the reality of what it would look like. I can only think that the anger and frustration that they've felt about the lack of jobs and the gradual dismantling of public services has been channelled by the media's decades of propaganda into mistrust and fear of migrants and Europe. To see this level of vitriol and paranoia so close to the surface for so many people - I fear for us, I really do. I must admit, I didn't put Cameron's resignation down as anything other than him not being prepared to do Johnson and Gove's work for them, but that's quite the fascinating theory. We'll soon see what they're made of, I suppose. My worry is that a lot of the things happening in the meantime will be irreversible by the time someone decides whether or not to push the button, Scotland certainly haven't wasted any time in speaking to the EU about staying in, and that's probably just the beginning.

UEFA Euro 2016
Germany and Belgium's performances were an exhibition of how to approach a tournament. Any side with aspirations of winning it needs to be able to play in different gears, and have the tactical nous to know when to apply which. I loved the way Hungary approached their game, although sadly I can't really see it catching on. Instead it'll probably be used an argument for bus-parking being the best way to take on the bigger teams. Still, for what it's worth, I'll remember the efforts of this Hungarian side for a long time to come. Slovakia in their defeat to Germany are a blank already.

So, if you were an Icelandic male between the ages of 18 and 35, you would have roughly about a one in two thousand shot of being in the national squad. Absolutely crackers. Of course, if England can't beat Iceland tonight, we'll be the laughing stock of Europe. Which would go quite nicely with our other current title as, er, the laughing stock of Europe.

UEFA Euro 2016
The odd thing about France is that they haven't really dominated any of their games. They seem to sit back for long periods and then take their opponents by surprise with quick goals. I thought Deschamps was pretty bold yesterday though, his change of formation after subbing Kante won it for them. Pogba also looked a lot better alongside Matuidi afterwards. If England do get past Iceland tonight, I'd be surprised if they were much more of a challenge to France than the Irish were. Although I've been known to get these things wrong on occasion...

UEFA Euro 2016
A shame for the Republic, who put up a good fight but basically collapsed within the space of a few minutes. How McClean managed not to square the ball to Murphy for an open goal, I have no idea. No shame losing to the host nation, though. Giroud proved his worth to the French team today. He suffers when used as a lone striker and left isolated, but with a superb player like Griezmann buzzing around him, he makes a great target man. If Deschamps sticks to his guns and continues playing them as a strike partnership, I really think France could win this tournament.

As do I. One of my biggest fears about all this is that Johnson is London through and through and that he'll leave everything else to rot. I myself come from a city that without European funding would probably have looked like a Mad Max film by now, but I'm ashamed to say that we were still one of the first to vote Leave, helping to hand free reign to the same right-wing government that spent about three decades beating the place senseless. It seems to me that migration was the main issue, but there are actually very few migrants there, just a lot of paranoid 'Sun' readers. It just goes to show that if you repeat a lie long enough and loud enough, people will start to believe it.

UEFA Euro 2016
It was always going to take a bit of luck or a big mistake to swing that one way or the other, and it came thanks to Bale's superb cross. For the most part though, the game was a colossal bore. Very heavy on physicality and very light on quality.

Decent start to the knockouts. The reluctance of the Polish coach to refresh his midfield was a headscratcher, but the team looked solid overall. If Lewandowski can sort out his shooting boots, they'll be a handful for Croatia or Portugal. It’s a pity that we'll not be seeing any more of Shaqiri in this tournament, he was the best player by a mile in the second half and extra-time. Man alive, was that goal amazing.

Speaking of Trump, he’s in Scotland at the moment talking about how great it is that they've got their country back, when every single Scottish region voted to remain.

Well yes, as much as a decision based on paranoia and misinformation can be a conscious one. I'm not foolish enough to think that the EU was perfect, but this is the equivalent of jumping into a lion's den because you've been bitten by a dog. The actual evidence seems to suggest that Britain was never excessively regulated or dictated to by Brussels. A lot of the people here have spent most of their lives being lied to by politicians and the rabid right-wing media, who have have been intentionally 'muddying the waters' for decades, and have only ever fed us negativity about being a part of Europe.

As in any country, the reason we elect these people (if you can call a parliamentary majority based on 35% of the popular vote 'elected') is for them to make the big decisions. They didn't think to check with the public when they took us to war, and other than in-fighting and shirking responsibility, there was no reason to put this to a vote either. The vote itself was only ever designed as an advisory opinion poll, so in theory, Cameron should now put the question to parliament. Clearly though, he didn't have the guts to oversee it. Now, someone worse is going to take over, and presumably force it through whether it's legally binding or not. This is much worse than a general election with a result that has consequences for three or four years, it's a once in a lifetime deal with changes that are going to have an impact for decades to come.

I agree, the UK will be a thing of the past before long. It'll start with Scotland leaving but it could easily end with Irish unity, as Northern Ireland (who also voted to remain) presumably seeks to distance itself from us. This is the reality of the hollow and meaningless phrase 'taking back control of our country'. The way we're going, we'll barely have a country to control.

The "What Are You Thinking About Right Now?" PIP
It was indeed, and the fact that Scotland is being pulled out of the EU against its will gives them reasonable grounds to hold another referendum on their independence. Which I would fully expect them to win this time.

The "What Are You Thinking About Right Now?" PIP
I'm no expert, but from what I read before voting, there was a virtually unanimous agreement between national and international bodies that leaving would cause short term losses and probably a long term slump, too. How much we actually stand to lose and how significant that slump will turn out to be is of course still in the wind, but the overall consensus beforehand that they would happen looked pretty striking. To be honest though, I feel much more fearful of what this (albeit slim) majority of people were thinking when they cast their votes. My gut feeling is that a great many of them have essentially just flushed the United Kingdom away for the sake of closing ranks on immigrants, which was highly unlikely to happen anyway. The EU are still going to call the shots on the terms of our leaving and when we do go, we'll be ruled by the least accountable Conservative government we've ever had.

I can honestly say that I've never felt less British than I do today. This is a disaster.

UEFA Euro 2016
I suppose the disappointing thing for Belgium is that it's hard to see clear progression between now and where they were two years ago at the World Cup. They're a bit bewildering because they seem to lurch from flashes of talent and sweet combination play, to almost completely switching off at times. It might be that Wilmots just suddenly hits upon a system that wrangles them into a more cohesive unit, but even if he doesn't, I still think this group can achieve in spite of him. Either way, it's going to take a good team to knock them out.

Glad it's only a two-day gap, I didn't really want to have to contemplate going outside.
