  1. I was sold from the moment Mads Mikkelsen started doing his bad guy speech.

I finally got around to having a look. Admittedly, I could never completely dislike a movie that includes the line "I'm Neil DeGrasse Tyson, bitch" but overall, it was pretty poor. 10-15 years between connected films usually means that someone either suddenly came up with a brilliant idea or someone suddenly needed to make a house payment. This I'd say almost certainly fell into the latter category.
  3. I don't really see how they can win, then. The reason why the burkini was first designed was to help Muslim women make that effort to integrate, and the state's response was to create a law instituting intolerance against them. All the ban will do is cause more division and create more inequality, it’s so knee-jerk that it calls into question the capacity for rational or logical thinking by those in power.
  4. My understanding of the burkini is that it was designed as a means for Muslim women to integrate with western society by joining them at the beach and at swimming pools, where Muslim women perhaps wouldn't typically go otherwise. Not to the extent of revealing their bodies of course, but as far as sitting unaccompanied and surrounded by non-Muslims, many of whom are men. That's a move forward and one that I personally would prefer to see encouraged, not attacked. If that protest in Iran was made to challenge the culture of forcing people to wear a hijab, then it was also in response to women being dictated to by male officials. Which is exactly what's happening in this instance.
  5. Even if we make the rather questionable assumption that nobody puts on a burkini by choice, then all this amounts to is a different group of men telling women what they can and can't wear.
  6. Yeah, that little taster was exactly what I'd expect from Japan. If anyone knows how to put on a show, it's them. Somewhat ridiculously, because I know there are still four years to go, I've already been looking into the time difference. Tokyo is eight hours ahead of Britain, so the evening programme for the big stadium events should be on our screens from around midday onwards.
  7. Turns out that Anna has herself a rather nice Instagram page, where on closer inspection, the family resemblance is really quite striking. Perhaps needless to say, Jac makes the occasional cameo.
  8. Apropos of nothing much, I just found out from a very reliable source that Monika Jagaciak's sister Anna competed in the triple jump this year.
  9. It briefly gave me a flashback to my younger days watching professional wrestling, when people would suddenly switch from good to evil for no other reason than to shock the crowd.
  10. This is my favourite thing from the Olympics so far.
  11. To be honest, having heard the 'details' of the supposed incident that led to Lochte's fabricated story, I still find myself wondering why anyone would want to invent such a ridiculous, overblown lie to cover up what seemed like a relatively innocuous (albeit really stupid) occurence. However, I reckon the following post probably explains it...
  12. The boss is hoping to take a look at this and a couple of other issues next week, so with a bit of luck, he'll be able to get it fixed for you.
  13. @PinkCouture Apparently, they've refilled the water polo pool with water from the practice pool in readiness for the aforementioned syncronised swimming event, so the swimmers can see and be seen. It's looking distinctly blue again this morning. I couldn't help noticing last night that the tennis court looks similarly unfinished.
  14. I'm going to miss old Wiggo. What a fitting way to close a phenomenal career.
  15. Damn you Canada, that was the one Great Britain really wanted! In all honesty though, despite not knowing beforehand that trampolining was in the Olympics, I couldn't help getting a lump in my throat watching a young woman I'd never heard of crying buckets after winning a silver medal she never expected.
  16. Hello, good evening and welcome!
  17. The identity of one of the main villains has been revealed, with Michael Chernus (Cal Chapman from 'Orange Is the New Black') confirmed to be appearing as The Tinkerer. What with the character of course being one of Spider-Man’s oldest enemies, it's very appropriate for the whole 'homecoming' angle. And we seemingly have our Flash Thompson now as well. Judging by his previous incarnations, this could strike people as a little odd, but it was revealed in some of the test footage that Tony Revolori (the young fellow from 'The Grand Budapest Hotel') will be taking the role. My guess is that this version will be less of a physical threat to Parker, which fits with a modern take on Spidey. Throw in him being rich and Peter being poor, and you have a pretty classic bullying dynamic.
  18. It might be a bit harder to take the brothers seriously after Legends of Tomorrow, but I'm looking forward to seeing what they've come up with.
  19. You weren't keen on Jessica? For me, that series might just have the edge over the first season of Daredevil, although they were very different and probably equally good in their own ways. I will admit to having been a little hesitant after the first teaser, but now, having seen the full-length trailer, I'm sold. Still, you'd think by now, the bad guys would have figured out never to try and fight these people in hallways.
  20. That doesn't sound very good at all. I suppose you have to wonder if it would still have happened had there been a roof over it, I don't know if an open-air pool was a wise choice in a tropical climate. On the plus side of course, sitting right alongside the blue swimming pool, it really matches the Rio 2016 branding. I personally would have been tempted to claim it was deliberate.
  21. Did they ever get to the bottom of why the pool turned green? I don't think I'd have fancied diving into it, it didn't look particularly healthy.

I was something of a latecomer to Studio Ghibli (although I had seen things like Spirited Away and Howl's Moving Castle), but recently made a concerted effort to start working my way through their catalogue and would recommend watching all of it. As loathe I am to make the obvious Disney comparison, they are similar in the sense that they're mostly high quality, enjoyable films that if you enjoy one or two, you'll likely enjoy most of their output. Anyway, are there other fans out there? Any particular favourite films?
