Saw the movie yesterday and LOVED it. Great story (but yeah-little bit too similar to A New Hope), amazing acting and I loved every scene with BB-8:) (Thumbs up!:D)

Spoiler

At this point I doubt if Rey is related to anyone. Wouldn't Han or Leia knew about Luke's daughter?

I just saw it and I loved it! :chicken:Great movie, great acting and I enjoyed the story. Though I agree @Avika that it has many similarities to A New Hope, but nothing that could against the movie itself.

I also loved the use of the music throughout the film. John Williams is a genius; it's amazing how all those motifs work so well with each character and situation.

(I'm in love with Rey :chicken: )

Spoiler

About Rey, I don't know... the fact that she's sensitive to the force also made me think she could be related to someone. But as the movie progressed I started to doubt it. As Avika says, Han or Leia should have known something.

Then again the fact that Anakin's lightsaber was "calling" her has me thinking...

But anyway, I guess we'll have to wait for Episode VIII to know.

I feel like it would be too obvious that Rey is related. Everyone would guess that and assume it so the big reveal of her role would have to be something completely different. Which I hope. I'm thinking she could've been the young jedi trainee that made Luke leave. Remember how there was something mentioned about that? I think the kid of original characters is done with Ben.

Just re-watched these scenes- so nice to revisit them after so long.

+1000 I was already a fan of his but he was gorgeous in this film. Daisy was beautiful and her acting was great. She reminds me a lot of Keira Knightley- they have the same voice in both accent and tone and their looks are vaguely similar.

I loved the movie- I saw it Thursday night at midnight, and again on Saturday. Didn't disappoint either time. I watched Episode VI before going on Saturday, and it definitely echoes it a lot, but I felt like the new cast kept things fresh enough. I'm excited to see where the story will go now.

I've been following Oscar's career for a few years now. He's such a talented actor. I'm so looking forward to his portrayal as apocalypse in X-Men. Based off of the trailer already he's gonna knock it out of the park. I agree exactly on Daisy. She has a very similar mouth to Keira. Their smile is so the same and yes when they speak I hear it. To me Daisy looks like a mix of Keira and Natalie. Which is kind of funny. She was such a standout. And so was John. He was really great. The whole cast is just talent after talent. I'm kind of bummed JJ won't be directing the sequels but at the same time Rian Johnson is an exceptionally gifted filmmaker. I love Looper. So I know he will do a brilliant job. And he's used Joseph Gordon a few times so let's hope he can bring him into the Star Wars universe.

Not really related to TFA, but I really hope Johnson goes with Tatiana Maslany for the next film. I heard she and Gina Rodrigez are on his shortlist, and I think she'll be incredible. She tested for Rogue One and Felicity beat her out, so I'm hoping she gets a second shot.

Also, more Maz! Love Lupita as an actress, and the voice acting was great.

Didn't Gugu Mbatha Raw get cast for the next film? In the part that Gina and Tatiana were being considered for. She's an incedible actress and she's stunning so I'm ok with that.

I've read that they're casting for two significant female roles- so one spot is still potentially open if Gugu is in the film. Gugu hasn't been officially confirmed, and a writer from Variety said she wasn't in. :idk: I doubt we'll have anything concrete for a while. I'd love for Gugu to be in- like you said, she's gorgeous, and I'm really, really pleased with the diversity of the castings so far. :chicken:

Ahhhh ok cool. Well then yes sign me up on either Tatiana or Gina. I would prefer Gina just that tiny little more. She's such a wonderful actress. I'm very much looking forward to this.

I wonder though how

Spoiler

The current new cast will fit in with additional actors. Daisy, John and Oscar. Plus I'm sure Adam, Domhnall, Lupita and Gwendoline will all be back. Add them plus two additional actresses as well as Benicio Del Toro who's taking on the villain role. A lot of characters and story to develop.

A bit more critical review: I'd give it a 4 out of 5.

It's a good entertainment (flows (often rushes, in fact) smoothly from scene to scene). I think its directorial style is very modernist/safe (this movie could have been made by those inter-changable superhero directors)- takes few risks (hence its allegiance to the basic and proven frame of ANH) which causes it appear kind of derivative but at the same time no serious problems. JJ Abrams has always been a TV series style director to me.  This style is generally weaker on world crafting (compared to say, Ridley Scott or Spielburg films) and focuses on giving the characters more face-time.  A major drawback was how the contrivances and homages were non-stop and far fetched & dictated the course of events.  Yes, fate is guiding but there are limits to this (Indiana Jones trilogy did well in managing boundaries) but this movie crosses the line quite frequently.

-The plot is a series of contrivances which conflict regularly with the laws of probability.  Does History really repeat itself, and if it does, will it do so in this fashion?

-  Overall I find the new cast serviceable but not memorable.  I'm indifferent.  A consequence of this is that I  can't think of a single scene that was particularly memorable or excellently acted.  This is very much Rey's story  (the change to a female lead is new and welcome).  The actress that carried her has skill but her writing was not particularly interesting.

-the stormtroopers/first order are less intimidating than in the originals because the menacing presence of Darth Vader no-longer overshadows them. Now they remind me of Monty Python Nazi skits. The institution of the "First Order" could have used more development/exploration.

-Instead of "perfect ultimate badass" we have Kim Jung-un.  The risky- and novel- thing was to use a petulant young man (who looks like a 1990s Goth- Marylin Manson) with serious mental issues as the leader. While this is novel (good for generating smirks), it is underwhelming and detracts from the seriousness of the "First Order" and moves it closer to Monty Python Nazi camp. He does not-ever- appear like a competent leader, remotely plausible to hold his role nor is the charisma anywhere near Darth Vader.

-  I did not like the use of the throwback actors.  The throwback actors could been made a lot more legendary, and kept at arms distance (the reality was far more mundane than the mythos). Too much Han Solo/Chewie and other oldies that are way past their prime. Eg. Hamil is a good example of what worked, although his part should been extended.

Further, I grew up seeing the star wars trilogy many times and am pretty familiar with sci-fi comic book tropes so considerable magic probably went over my head.  I am slanted towards the new and the innovative, or improved iterations.  So a bit more cynically  I can see Disney's consulting hand potentially over this in shaping the construction of the film.  They have the knack for merchandising and marketing to the broadest audience possible, which influenced creative choices.   This movie is doing very well, and has served its purpose.

other thoughts:

-The boring and irrelevant sci-fi political babble in the prequels has been removed in favor of a brisk, pace of action.

-The character of Finn appears to be a disguised "Star Wars Fanboy" who fortuitously drops into events. rather than an actual essential person in the narrative.  He functions as comic relief, stimulates energy, and acts as a human relation/reflection of the audience.    Is it not every Star Wars Fanboy/girl's dream to be dropped into space opera events themselves and accompany a pretty/handsome interest?

-My guess is that the relentless homaging to the past is likely to be tuned down in later installments now that it's served its purpose.

Thanks for all your thoughts guys! This theory makes sense too:

And definitely Daisy is very similar to Keira

Husband called it about Daisy/Kiera looking alike and sounding alike.

we both loved it, and on one big spoiler, it didn't really surprise me.

May 2017 can't come fast enough!

I agree, their vocals are somewhat similar and also the head shape/height.  Keira however, is very thin and more aristocratic looking than Daisy- which worked to her disadvantage when she played a bounty hunter.  There's something about the everyperson to Daisy's appearance (middling height, pretty but not with the most delicate features, bouncy/friendly) that shows broad appeal.

Although given all the athletic feats I was also thinking that a tall, athletic type (like a young Charlize (Furiosa)) could play Rey.  I'm a bit fond about the 'valkyrie' trope.

Luke left to find the temple because Ren (or Ben Solo, one of his students) was seduced to the dark side and killed the students

  • 2 weeks later...

Imma finally take the time to express my feelings about this movie. I am a huge Star Wars fan, i went to the premiere of Episodes I,II and III back in the day and I adore this saga, it's probably my favorite one ever, so to say I was excited about this it's an understatement.

I was terrified about it, honestly, the last three were so terrible I was terrified this one would suck too but I am so glad I was 100% wrong. I absolutely love it, it was perfect and it left me with just enough questions to keep me hyped for Episode VIII. Great job from everyone involved, I was pleasently surprised to have a new female lead, based on the trailers and such I was sure Finn would be our new lead, but I'm thrilled it's Rey! Daisy is just perfect for the part and the acting from everyone was good too and I was very surprised by Adam when he was cast I was terrified because I truly hate Girls and that's the only thing I've ever seen him, everyone delivered and the visual effects were absolutely on point too.

I loved the relationship between Rey and Finn so so much, and I love Finn because he does give the movie a little more of a human vibe, he is not this perfect person who does it all right, he makes mistakes and tries to correct them and make the best out of it.

Now major spoilers ahead, do not read if you haven't seen the movie!

Spoiler

I cried when Han died, can't deny it he is my favorite character and I can't belive he died, I knew either him or Leia would die as soon as we were told Kylo was their son, i saw it coming but I was hoping it would be Leia lol. I do understand why they did it tho, I'm just glad at least Chewie survived.

As far as Rey's parents go I am completely clueless, maybe a not-so-distant family member? She clearly has the force in her so she can't just be the daughter of some randoms, maybe Luke's mom had more children after he left and she's his niece? lol IDK but I doubt she is Leia & Han's daughter, that would be stupid that they don't know they had another kid and it would also be repeating Luke and Leia's story which I don't think it's something they want to do. All in all I do hope we find out in Episode VII. Maybe Anakin cheated on Padme with Sabé and they had a kid who had Rey, she does look a lot like Keira/Sabé who looks a lot like Natalie/Amidala lol.

And am I the only one who wishes Poe had stated dead? That was probably the part Iiked the least from the story. Did he never look for BB8? How did he get out of the planet? Did he ever try to find Finn? I think Poe will be kind of the new Han Solo from this generation but I didn't find his character to be remarkable, not blaming it on Oscar, I just think Poe didn't really add much to the story after the crash and giving us Finn.

Also for anyone interested, Adam is hosting SNL when it comes back January 16th, there will probably will be at least one Star Wars related sketch there.

Oh and add me to the Oscar fangirl club, he is so charming:heart: Also agreeing about the Daisy-Keira similarities, they have the same smile and their voices are very similar too.
