I think modern post-Vietnam American films- baring some exceptions- typically have a "war is hell/bad" sort of message to it. The exceptions are typically more neutral than political. Post-Saving Private Ryan you have the "gritty/dark" aspect being a must have. By aspects I mean certain over-the-top aspects, like fighting to the last breath for the state and certain cinematic techniques.
