  1. My issue with it wasn't so much that he killed people, because a story focussing on Wayne's guilt and his descent into antihero territory could have been interesting. It was more that it happened as this throwaway thing, without any mention of what killing actually means to Batman. If you're going to play fast and loose with one of the guy's defining characteristics, I'd expect to see it justified in some way or at the very least discussed. Snyder was just so far off-base with that. I’ve read rumours that the standalone Batman film might cover the Red Hood storyline, but I’m at a loss as to how it would be handled because really, there’s nothing separating this Batman from the way the Red Hood operates at this point.
  2. Righto, leave it with me and I'll see if I can get to the bottom of it.
  3. In principle, it's not a bad idea. As a member of staff, I've seen some very heated debates about models, movies, music and sports that would rival any of the political discussions that go on here, but as you say, we have specific areas for all those things. At very least, it's a conversation worth having.
  4. I wasn't aware of that issue, is it still happening?
  5. Yeah, I think really looking into the issues is getting much more difficult these days. If you don't keep up with the news you're uninformed and if you do you're misinformed. It's difficult to view a lot of journalism now as anything other than opinion masquerading as 'discussion' pieces, where the point isn't really to discuss but to plant a message in enough different places to be easily remembered. Complicated issues are reduced to simplified soundbites, which actually makes discussion redundant, because it nearly always degenerates into a choice of 'with us or against us'.
  6. The Daily Mail is a tabloid and not a very good one, it specialises in faux outrage, elitism and scaremongering. To your point though, from what I can tell, our foreign aid doesn't seem to be used very effectively, but with much of it going on business interests rather than helping people genuinely in need, it probably pays for itself and more. There'd be no reason for a Tory government not to cut it otherwise.
  7. I hereby declare the voting officially closed. Once again, to all who took part, thanks ever so much. I'll start posting the results in the next couple of days.
  8. No problem, thanks for voting!
  9. Not a problem. Thanks for voting!
  10. Thanks Pinky. It's always fun while counting the votes to see the top 100 gradually take shape, but it should be fascinating this time around. Unlike previous years, I don't see an obvious winner yet.
  11. A huge thank you again to those taking the time to vote, I love you all. There's still a few days left for anyone who wants to submit a list.

With regard to the xenomorphs' origins, I'm really hoping that they're still holding back a couple of choice twists, either for this film or a future one. I like to think that perhaps the engineers created the black ooze using harvested xenomorph DNA, but weren't the original creators of the xenomorphs themselves.
  14. Confirmed as Amber Prehn.

Yeah, I'm getting the impression that this will be pitched somewhere between a rehash of the original film and a kind of 'soft reboot' of Prometheus, which I guess I'm still trying to wrap my head around. It would feel like a missed opportunity if they didn't explore at least some of the themes from the latter, but the more likely scenario seems to be that they play it safe, put most of that stuff on the back burner and make a jumpy horror/slasher flick instead.

I must admit, I'm not that interested in a story where they're just kind of whipped up in a lab, or something to that effect. I much prefer the idea of the xenomorphs predating everything else and later being wrangled into some kind of biological weaponry by the engineers.

I haven't seen much in the way of leaks, but my feeling was that the whole colony ship thing could be a ruse, with the Company sending it there in response to a signal received from David and/or Shaw, and the other Fassbender perhaps being being the only one to know the real mission. The idea that this ship just happened to stumble across the engineer homeworld and then just happened to find David and Shaw, all just a few years removed from the events of Prometheus, seems kind of unlikely.

I'm in two minds on that, really. In some ways, I wish they'd stop trying to make sense of everything, because nothing ruins a scary dark room like switching on the lights. Explaining away all the origins, motives and so on of aliens (not only in this franchise, in many others too) makes them feel more and more like CGI or people running around in costumes, and to me the appeal of the series was always the suspense more so than the horror. Then again, I hope there’s more to it than just rehashing the original Alien.

It looks very xenomorph-driven but I don't know if I could see Scott ignoring the engineer stuff altogether, I think he's trying to please everyone. I suppose if this movie ties the concepts of Prometheus and Alien together cohesively, it might actually improve the former in terms of being part of an ongoing story arc. Honestly though, after watching the trailer, my enthusiasm has mostly dissipated. That shower scene was a total eye-roller, it could have been lifted from any number of trash level horror movies.

They're not giving much away at the moment, although it looks like it's been shot in a similar style to the original (cinematography of course being one of the main hallmarks of all Ridley Scott films, no matter how iffy the content). Visually, I'm not sure they've quite matched that startlingly futuristic but lived-in realism that made the original so compelling as a spectacle, at least on the evidence we have so far. Villeneuve has done consistently interesting work throughout his career, though. Incendies, Prisoners, Enemy, Sicario and Arrival (probably my favourite movie of 2016) are all deep, carefully constructed and very thoughtful films.

Yeah, for me, Black Flag had the best story of the series, mainly because some of the sillier Dan Brown-esque elements took a back seat and the game told a fun tale while still managing to weave in a bit of intrigue. In general, I always found the detailed historical settings a lot more interesting than the half-baked Animus stuff. Obviously, when you play the games it's easier to forget about that and concentrate on the important aspects of running around the rooftops, sword fighting and shoving annoying minstrels into canals. Unfortunately though, none of that stuff will save a movie from a poor plot.

I stopped reading at 'run'. What I really like is how much it looks like the egg poster from the original Alien. Glad to see Noomi Rapace back, too. I've been a fan of hers since that astonishing performance in the Dragon Tattoo trilogy. I thought she was great in Prometheus and a worthy follow-up character to Ripley.

Michael Owen all day for me. How a man who relies so heavily on the 'say what you see' style of punditry, basically reiterating what we've all just watched onscreen without offering any kind of insight or depth, could so consistently manage to talk such absolute rot is a genuine mystery. Nice chap though he obviously is, you wonder why Kilbo Baggins even bothers. He doesn't appear to get any particular enjoyment out of it, and goodness knows he’s not bringing much to the table. Hoddle is another constant source of irritation, but you at least get the impression that, if he wasn't so lazy, he'd be capable of more.

It's currently at a measly 17% on RT. I had a vain hope that this could be the video game movie to break the cycle. I might just give it a miss.
