I saw it last night, and I'm split. There were moments that I really, really loved but there were also a few things that I didn't like.

I think I want to see it again though, get a second look at it.

I'm not excited that Abrams will be doing Episode IX after seeing the Last Jedi.

Hopefully I'm wrong.

I’m the opposite. After some thought, I’ve realized I’m pretty disappointed with TLJ and am looking forward to JJ’s return.

I think people will either love or hate the movie.

JJ brought back the casual Star Wars fan and gave the fans a nostalgia Star Wars movie. Rian probably drove away the casual Star Wars fan, but gave the franchise the movie it needed imo.

The Force Awakens had way more hype around it due to the anticipation of no Star Wars for 10 years, the big 3 coming back, new story, and new characters. The Last Jedi didn't really have any hype leading up to the release of the movie. I think the Last Jedi is by far the superior movie to the Force Awakens.

^^  The fact that you liked what Rian did with The Last Jedi more than what JJ did with The Force Awakens makes me optimistic about Rian being in charge of the new trilogy.

^I think JJ & Rian both did the jobs that they needed to do with Star Wars.

I'm just afraid with JJ coming back to direct Episode IX now is that he'll retcon some things and be unoriginal.

A few initial minor thoughts (hidden for safety):

Spoiler

I was curious to see how easy it was going to be to remove Leia from the story. Based on how The Last Jedi ended, it's clear they intended for Leia to have a major role in the next movie.

I was slightly surprised how many characters met their end in this movie.

My reaction to the porgs was weird. I was fine with them on the island but they annoyed me in the ship. The good thing was they are not prominent enough to be really annoying.

EP VIII is not overly similar to EP V in the way EP VII was similar to EP IV. I know some people were worried about that, it doesn't make any difference to me or change my overall enjoyment.

The visual of the cruiser destroying the fleet by ramming it at lightspeed was impressive.

I liked the use of funny moments throughout the movie and I liked how they didn't rely on droids for funny moments.

I feel like Rian retcon(or at least ignored) things that JJ set up though? :idk: (One of my main issues with the film.)

- The rift between Kylo and Luke. In episode 7 it's presented as a planned massacre by Kylo and the Knights of Ren(which also indicates that Kylo was well into Snoke's grasp at that point.) In episode 8, it's more of a scared, angry boy snapping at a betrayal. It just doesn't fit the narrative set up in TFA. In Rey's flashback, we see Luke and R2D2 observing the destruction of the the temple in the rain, but a different version of events is shown in TLJ.

- Rey's parentage. I don't care that she's not a Skywalker/Kenobi/Whatever. I think it's wonderful that she's just a random somebody who becomes an integral part in this story. However the reveal, and Rey's emotionally resolution with it, was completely lacklustre, especially with it being a key plot point of episode 7 and 8. And it doesn't fit with what was established in the TFA novelization, where Rey is left by her parents and they reassure her and promise they'll come back for her. (Which doesn't fit with some absentee parents selling their daughter off for drinking money.) Unless this is intended to be a lie by Kylo, and then people will just say JJ retconned Rian's canon, when it reality it's the opposite way around.

Mostly I don't care that Rian wanted to take risks with the film and do something different than a typical Star Wars, I just wish he had done it in a way that still respected that TFA set up.

Also I found the humour more on-par with a Marvel movie, and kind of cheap. :ninja:

... And i feel raped :D

Seriously, how ? How they've been able to dirt such a great story like StarWars. That new trilogy smell bad since they announced it, but i thought Disney was going to surprise me, in the good sense, and no. Everything in that last movie is bad. It's like a nightmare, or a bad joke.

The whole new story is not good. The characters ... are inexistent.

The whole ideology that Mickey is promoting since now 3 movies has definitely NOTHING to do in these movies.

Simply, this afternoon i did not watch a StarWars, but a Disney movie. Sure a good one, but not a StarWars ...

What's interesting is that the box office performance of a franchise movie will quite often live or die by its hardcore fans and whether or not they're prepared to come back for multiple viewings. In this case, many of them will probably be coming back just to try and make their minds up about it. I personally loved Last Jedi, but looking around at some of the initial reactions online, I can't help thinking that a lot of people (not necessarily here, just in general) are forgetting that they saw the original trilogy as children and are seeing the new one as adults. Two scenes in particular stood out for me...

...the silent destruction after Holdo goes to light speed and Luke walking out alone to face an army of AT-AT Walkers. Incredible visuals are mostly taken for granted these days, but those shots were seriously stunning. My jaw dropped as an adult, so I can only imagine how that would have felt to a kid.

The space casino stuff was slow-moving and a bit laborious, but the only thing that was a disappointment to me overall was the shortage of info on Snoke. Apart from that, I was glad that Rian Johnson didn't give in to cheap or obvious moves. If Star Wars is really dead now to certain so-called fans, then long live Star Wars, and stories that move on from the originals.

^  There was a young boy behind me when I watched the movie. He made a unique sound of excitement when Luke walked out. I don't think I remember the sound well enough to describe it, but he loved that. You're right, it's a different experience for a child.

I remember enjoying the Empire strikes back and the Return of the Jedi the most as a kid.  Star wars and Indiana Jones were frequently on the background during visits to  my uncle's family.  I never understood the backlash against the teddy bears.  I thought it was interesting/cute...

The original trilogy still has a lot of iconic scenes and overall I prefer the practical effects over the CGI.  (this is why I still like Ridley Scott although he is declining as a director) The practical effects made Star wars feel weighted and immersive.  It's very interesting to see how the original star wars trilogy was made.  It involved an enormous number of miniaturized models and numerous set pieces.  Classic franchises like Blade Runner, Alien/s, Indiana Jones, etc. did the same thing.

The last Jedi is packed with immersion breaking CGI like most action movies these days.

It's interesting to note the mention of Ridley Scott there too, because you can certainly set your watch to the kind of rinse and repeat cycle that many Alien fans have seemingly been stuck in recently ("I hope Prometheus isn't just more xenomorphs running around" (Prometheus is released) "Where were all the xenomorphs?" (Alien Covenant is released) "That was just more xenomorphs running around").

The same thing seems to be happening with Star Wars at the moment, only we're not quite as far down the rabbit hole just yet. Give it another two years until the build-up to Episode IX, we'll have probably circled back around from "Last Jedi was adventurous and different and I hate that, give me the Star Wars of old" to "I hope Abrams doesn't play it safe like he did with Force Awakens, give me something adventurous and different".

Actually Crait and globally the universe/creatures are part of the (few) good things in the movie.:hiro:

A huge complaint from a lot of fans with The Force Awakens was that it was too similar to A New Hope. Then we get The Last Jedi that has an original story line with elements of the OT & PT sprinkled in, it also expands on the mythology of the Force and explores new worlds unsimilar to other new ones we've seen. Then some fans still complain that the movie ruined their childhood.:rofl::rofl:

I find it funny that people are never satisfied. :chicken: Most fans wanted super Luke to come save the day when he said in the movie that he wasn't going to do that.

Episode IX is going to make a lot of money imo, casual fans don't give a crap about middle acts. They want to see the beginning and ending. :chicken:
