Joe > Average Posted January 1, 2009 Author Posted January 1, 2009 Unlike all those models with 70 year old mega-million and billionaires sleepin' for "love" ? Quote
Joe > Average Posted November 9, 2009 Author Posted November 9, 2009 Oh, I just read an interesting article about Rubik's and Struss' careers.... I remember reading in other articles about Anja, that as a child, she used to watch George Michael's videos with supermodels and dreaming she'll be like naomior Linda one day.... Ok, anyway....In the recen article, an agent from Anja's agency said: "There is no comeback to 90's, when a famous face, model's surname attracted. The reason is rivial: nowadays there are several dozen times more excellent models than in the middle of 90's and nobody want to pay that generously for face. It's not the same with a known singer or actress. Then they will pay millions". Thanks for sharing . Only there are many models Anja's age or younger (Miranda Kerr, even Selita ) in music videos . There's always been pretty and sexy singers and actresses, but the less talented, more eye candy oriented singers and celebs are indeed an obstacle for the models . On a Positive Note... And on the positive side, even if it won't be like it was, I think it is sometimes easy to overlook the pros for being a model today and that is it is easier for the least known to be more known now (to a degree because of the internet) than the past and its also easier to become a model now because more is accepted (what was once "ugly" is now "edgy" for example). Doors that were once shut in your face are now open wide even if you don't become a general household name. Only 3 Problems (for me) though. 1. This issue isn't something that only happened to the industry, but something it did to itself too. Once the "waif" era come on strong, many of the trends the industry were more and more alienating the mainstreem market and helped to estrange the industry from the mainstreem market. But the public, as they always do, moved on and adapted. This isn't to say being estranged from the mainstreem is terrible, but just to say that the decline of commercial acceptance was brought about by the industry itself moreso than anything else. 2. As much as I love them, many of these "excellent models" she refers to (many of the "edgy" high fashion models of our era) just aren't truly relatable and acceptible to the general mainstreem market (and absolutely wouldn't have been in the past). I'm always amazed to hear fans say Tanya or Sasha would have been "supers" in the past. Their full potential is realized today because this is the era built around their stregnths. But a supermodel by nature is someone both fashion and mainstreem industry can relate to. This includes for the most part too having looks not only women and fashion people appreciate, but also the average mainstreem man . To really break through to mainstreem noteriety one has to have mainstreem relatableness and appeal too, which a lot high fashion models today don't have and most of their fans don't want them to have for fear that they'll then turn to strictly commercial oriented modeling or "worse" persue non-modeling in general. 3. I don't want to offend their fans (I am a fan too), but the reality is English is the international language of the entertainment industry and if some of the top models of our era (some of the VS Brazilians for example) both spoke better English and were more relatable to the English speaking market they would be supermodels right now. Hence lies the conflict, the door would go through commercial and mainstreem appeal . Quote
Joe > Average Posted November 11, 2009 Author Posted November 11, 2009 Of course I made this thread because I think it is in some shape or form doable (even if not on the same scale, can be much better than it is) and I want to make this a poll if I can narrow it down to 3-4 areas.... In the mean time... Best Candidates/Reasons for Hope (also, only thing standing in their way) Gisele - Basically done it actually. I think speaking better English would have made it unquestined (by getting her more speaking opportunities), but IMO she has done it. Laetitia Casta - Has basically done it as many people who aren't even into fashion know who she is and this is despite not having a model size or model height. So, whether you liker her or not I find that hopeful. Doutzen Kroes - She actually is a supermodel in her homeland. She has also overcome being short as well which is hopeful and her look is acceptible in both high fashion and commercial audiences. Everyone I know of whose met her says she's a nice person, but maybe because of a slight relatability gap to an international audience (based on the reactions to some of her interviews) may cause more speaking opportunities (on an international stage) in her case would probably do more harm than good (don't hate me ) or more good than one would expect, who knows ? Marisa Miller - No model since Cindy Crawford I don't think has had her combination of both relatability to an English speaking audience, man appeal, female relatability, charisma and communication skills. Not what many would call a "conventional beauty" for a commercial model and also not runway height, which is even more reason to hope because of what she is doing despite this. Emily Didonato - Her success in the commercial modeling world in this short span of her career is phenomenal and now a VS contract I believe. I think with maybe just a music video appearance in a hit song and a couple high profile speaking opportunities, she could surprise us. Candice Swanepoel - Simular to the last. Simular girl next door look, but better body and sexiness which would give her more man appeal (whereas Emily would probably be more relatable). A couple high profile videos, couple movie cameos and who knows ? Adriana Lima - IMO (no offense to fans and I am one), I think she actually would be, but I think a combination of a slight languabe barrier and some of the general public has always found her type of quikiness somewhat off putting (though charming) and just maybe makes her hard to understand to much of the general public. If it weren't for that barrier she would have had many more speaking opportunities, but based on the popularity she's had despite that, I think she would if not for that barrier. Alessandra Ambrossio - Not only kindof the same (language barrier and to some offputting qurkiness), but she has also turned down many opportunities that would have made her more famous because she loves modeling so much, but I can't fault that at all , go Ale . Gemma Ward - I call her my supermodel , but as I said commercial relatability and acceptability plays a huge role. I think people could relate to her but on the mainstreem acceptability side, the interpretations of her look are of course largely divided ranging from ugly alien, alien, gorgeous alien to gorgeous...but she is still very well known and was even on the cover ot Time Magazine and she'll always be my supermodel . Lolita Posted January 18, 2010 Posted January 18, 2010 I think photographers for make up ads need to focus back to the models. Quote
dizzymisslizzy Posted January 18, 2010 Posted January 18, 2010 Natasha Poly is a supermodel. IMO. she does too have that language barrier but she speaks it well, and you can understand her a bit better than some of the brazillians (adri, ale), shes the runway queen, she could easily land a "commerial" cosmetic campaign, her face is beautiful. its just shes more high fashion than commerial and that doesn't appeal to all, you need a bit of both to become a supermodel (again IMO) shes done VS, I would love her to do an american cosmetic brand. idk i'm rambling and on another note, esp here in america its all about "reality tv" drama crap and whos the "star" of the week, i mean it could even be like SNOOKIE from the MTV show Jersey Shore..its really sad. It seems everyones forgotten about models, and look for their fav "stars of tv" actresses, actors and reality stars. BRING BACK THE MODELS, GREAT EDITORIALS AND WONDERFUL STORIES TO GO W/ THEM! Quote
Joe > Average Posted January 18, 2010 Author Posted January 18, 2010 I think she technically already is a supermodel. But then, like you said, its probably easier to be more recognized the better you can communicate with an international audience and having some commercial work and appeal. Which is ironic that many high fashion fans want their favorites to get more attention but yet cringe to see them doing commercial work . Quote
