VS has implemented a tier system for their models. First you have the Angels: Adriana, Alessandra, Karolina, Izabel, Selita, and Miranda in that order. The Angels are the creme de la creme for VS, but Victoria's Secret also has a tier that is just their "Spokesmodels"

These girls are contracted but not as tightly as the angels (Marisa, Emanuela, Julia S, Heidi, Bianca, Doutzen, & Caroline F ect ) subject to change depending on how the public responds to them), they don't do as many events as the angels, but they are promised at least 1-2 commercials in a 3 year span, at least that's what I've been told. If the public doesn't respond well to them they are moved out of the catalogue/site for the up coming seasons.

Then you have their regulars which is easy to figure out, and then the new "Runway models".

The 2nd in line angel (Alessandra) was supposed to prominently be throughout the catalog to boost sales and get her face out there, however she got pregos and Adriana had to pick up the slack. The lead Angel which is Adriana, is promoted at premieres, she's doing things as the REP for Victoria Secret.

The media likes to throw around the word "Angel" for everything VS. Just because someone says a model is an angel in the media, doesn't make it so.

Now with the spokesmodels, if the general public seems to favor them they have a chance at a promotion to become an "Angel". However it normally takes a few years to even start to be considered.

^ I think you're the only one who still believes all of that, Pretty, I mean, it makes no sense in the first place to hire "spokesmodels" (their contracts = $$$) when VS is already overloaded with Angels with minimal events for them all to go on. If what you say is true, then VS has paid Julia, Caroline, and Bianca a year's salary for nothing since signing them as spokesmodels, and that to actually give them an assignment would mean snubbing a higher-paid Angel. That has "dumb business" written all over it.

Not to mention, it's practically indisputable by now that Marisa's been an Angel since late 2007, and from the huge push VS has just given Doutzen, she's clearly on that path unless she's meant to be a temporary replacement for Ale.

Models like Gemma and Daria are different in that they have reached the level of supermodel already

As far as Daria and Gemma, they aren't well-known outside of high-fashion and runway. VS is one if not the top contract and it gives huge amounts of exposure outside of fashion. Many people know the VS Angels and don't know anything about the rest of the modeling industry.

pretty, I never heard about there being an actual Spokesmodel set, but that would explain some things. I usually call them "Demi-Angels". The media does throw around the name angel too much.

And as far as their salary, even if they do more press and possibly get a higher pay check than one of the angels, it still doesn't make them an "angel". The angels are the elite.

Obviously there is a big difference with the 90's supermodels that were actually known to what the term has become now. Supermodels do exist today but not on that level anymore. Daria and Gemma and Natalia have all been established supermodels. It does not matter if they are not as famous as the 90's supermodels because its not their fault, the definition of a supermodel has changed over time.
