^ At last, some new Anna Calvi in full! Pretty compelling tune (love the quick burst of epic guitar work), though it strikes me more as a good album track than a lead single. Still, something tells me there's a lot more to come.

Well, credit where it's due, Fulham dominated us for the four seconds it took to take their corner. We were only on top for the remaining 94:56. Not exactly the start we were hoping for then, but a much better all-round effort than anything I saw last season, with the new signings mostly looking the part. Still plenty of room for improvement, though, and the wretched run of home games we'll now have to negotiate is a concern. Crying out for a creative midfielder to play alongside the beastly Cabral and, as has been the case since dinosaurs roamed the earth, a proper left-back. Superb win for Villa yesterday (the new away kit reminds me of battenburg - the cake not the referee), Arsenal and Arsene Wenger reaching borderline dangerous levels of self-parody at present. P.S. I love you, Simon Mignolet. P.P.S. Nice teeth, Brendan.
  4. A semi-autobiographical role on 'Criminal Minds' as a teen pop star who commits murders and writes songs about it surely beckons now for Taylor.

I'll be seeing it too, anything with Noomi is a winner in my eyes. Tom and Gary sure do love working together.

Don't know much about this one, heck of a cast though.

Another new track from Kings of Leon. I was cautiously optimistic about the new album, but this one is rather more 'Come Around Sundown'-y than I'd hoped. We'll see though...

Zola Jesus goes upbeat (well, slightly).

^I can't help thinking that the three guys should have been played by Hanson, but apart from that, it's a good one!

^ Good job it wasn't Wes Brown, would have been a six-month lay-off.

That is interesting. I suppose it's debatable since most of the music incorporated elements of punk and metal, and while Nirvana and Pearl Jam were very punk-inspired, Soundgarden and Alice In Chains leaned more towards metal/hard rock. Personally though, I'd classify them all as Grunge, since it was a scene and they were all a part of it. They were from Seattle, had a certain appearance, were anti-mainstream rock, and had similarly dark lyrics.

Agree on that, Green River were a hugely significant influence on the Grunge sound, but in terms of threatening to make a commercial impact on a wider world and the whole movement aspect (it was the first single on Sub Pop), I do think 'Touch Me I'm Sick' was the breakout moment, even though Mudhoney, for whatever reason, never really broke out themselves.
  19. I've only recently made my first foray into 'Breaking Bad', but I'm assuming the show eventually ends as follows - Walt goes into witness protection, changes his name, and gets married. And so begins 'Malcolm in the Middle'.

Great topic. In terms of the poll, I’d have to go with Nirvana. They were the band that meant the most to me when I was younger and I think out of all of them, they had the highest highs. I too think of Grunge as a movement rather than a musical genre, since a lot of it centered around Seattle and the Sub Pop label in the late eighties, and I consider Mudhoney's 1988 single 'Touch Me I'm Sick' to be the opening salvo. Although of course, the 'big four' were the ones who took the commercial baton and ran with it.

  24. I enjoyed the first one, but in many ways, I too thought of it as the weakest of Marvel's Phase 1 crop. Still, now that the obligatory origin story is largely out of the way, the follow-up should be relatively easy to get right. Nice to hear that Scarjo and Hayley Atwell will be involved again.
