I suspect they've purposely gone for an older Doctor this time to try and reduce the chances of losing him to Hollywood in a year or two. Which isn't meant as a criticism of Peter Capaldi, I think he's a fantastic actor. You might have seen him in 'Fires of Pompeii', an episode from the David Tennant era which also featured Karen Gillan.
