A magnificent performance in the first half and a spirited effort in the second, but in the end, it wasn't to be. Proud of Gus and the lads for the superb feat of getting there, and proud that it took goals of such majestic quality to beat us. Playing like that against anyone else, perhaps even against City on another day, we'd have absolutely walked it. Time to concentrate on the league now (and various other cliches!).- Football

With the cast it's packing and the fascinating true story behind it, it's a movie that could and should have been a cracker. It does have a certain easy-going charm that makes it very watchable, but it's no classic.- Music of 2014

Going down a treat so far. It's essentially part two of 'Sea Change', which I couldn't get enough of at the time.- X-Men: Days of Future Past (2014)

I haven't been brave enough to try reading 'Gravity's Rainbow' just yet, I'm still trying to work my way up to it. This was the most accessible Pynchon book I've come across so far, though. For the kind of story that it is, the plot is a pretty typical one. It's darkly funny, very twisty, with a number of seemingly isolated events that gradually interlock, and a heavy emphasis on examining the social attitudes of the sixties. There's a colossal cast (for reference, I had to jot down the names of some of the people involved and what connected them while I was reading ), but the main character is a guy called Doc Sportello (to be played in the movie by Joaquin Phoenix, I believe), a lonely and permanently stoned private eye who bumbles his way through most of his cases, often solving them through sheer good fortune. As you might expect, his occupation and view of the world are rather at odds with his hippy ideals; he carries a deep sense of loss for what he thinks the previous decade could and should have become, and has a resentment of corporate greed and the self-involvement of the exploited. Think of it as an angrier and more politicised ‘Big Lebowski’ and you’ll be on the right lines.- Music of 2014

Welcome!- Hi everyone,
Welcome!- Heroes
Remember Heroes? It's back. In Pog form.- "Inherent Vice"-- (Paul Thomas Anderson)
Joanna Newsom? How random. The book is a great read (if a little slight by Pynchon's usual standards), and a fun take on the now well-trodden hard-boiled LA detective story. Looking forward to seeing what Anderson does with it.- Captain America: The Winter Soldier (2014)

Had a look at the opener. I wouldn't say I’m completely hooked but clearly, there’s a lot to like. The languid pacing is like watching a novel unfold onscreen, there's a dreamlike atmosphere that you could cut with a knife, and the promise of there being no irritating cliffhangers to negotiate is an added bonus. The actual murder mystery element is neither here nor there for me at the moment, I'm more interested in finding out out exactly why the two leads are seemingly estranged. When they spoke about each other, the tension was palpable (Rust never sleeps? Arf! ). I do hope they’re going to give Michelle Monaghan more to do in the coming episodes though, it's hard not to be suspicious of writers who can't (or won’t) portray women as anything other than dead bodies or prostitutes. Agreed, I thought the antlers and the elaborate posing of the victims were very reminiscent of 'Hannibal', which I just couldn't stick. Drearily paced, pretentiously arty and generally imposible to take seriously, while simultaneously taking itself incredibly seriously. Thankfully, nothing else in 'True Detective' reminded me of it.- Football
You don't get relegated because of what you do in trips to the Emirates, but that was nowhere near what we've come to expect from a Gus Poyet Sunderland side, albeit against a concise and effective Arsenal. Next league game isn't until the middle of March, hoping against hope that our position doesn’t deteriorate too much in the meantime.- Music of 2014
Here's one especially for Stormbringer's perusal. Very Audioslave/Soundgardeny. - Football
