DiCaprio mistaken for armed robber by Sydney jeweler

SYDNEY -- He starred in "Blood Diamond," among host of other blockbusters -- but that didn't help a Sydney jeweler who mistook mega-movie hunk Leonardo DiCaprio for an armed robber, The (Sydney) Daily Telegraph reported Friday.

The Family Jewels shop owner Kane Kelfkens told the paper his unsuspecting sales assistant, named only as Linda, feared the worst when DiCaprio's bodyguards approached the store, with one taking up a position in the doorway to keep watch while the other stood in the shop corner.

"Linda was serving a customer when the two big bodyguards approached. The customer sees what's happening and says, 'This doesn't look good,'" Kelfkens said.

DiCaprio came in wearing a hoodie, cap and dark sunglasses -- and the sales assistant, failing to recognize the visiting Hollywood star, feared it was a robbery.

"Linda sent the customer next door to get me, thinking the shop is about to be robbed by these guys," chuckled Kelfkens. "By the time I get in there Linda has realized who she was serving and let me know everything was all right."

US star DiCaprio -- in Sydney until December to shoot Baz Luhrmann's "The Great Gatsby" -- was "very friendly" as he browsed, saying he was looking for a gift for his mother Irmelin.

He eventually picked out a Nepalese antique necklace set with lapis lazuli and coral -- but then had to leave in a rush because his car was parked in a clearway.

"He said he would be back to buy it another day," Kane said.

The history of jewelry is now on all sites... several people retweet. I spent hours laughing... hilarious. And worse is that I was so excited about the pictures that only after I read the news :blush:.

The owner of a Sydney jewelry shop claims his sales assistant mistook DiCaprio for a robber during a confusing – but amusing – moment earlier this week.

Two of the actor’s burly bodyguards approached the store and kept watch, making the suspicious clerk fear they were casing the joint.

When DiCaprio himself came in wearing a hoodie and dark sunglasses, the sales assistant didn’t recognize him and feared a robbery was underway.

She took precautions, sending someone to alert the store’s owner, who had stepped out for coffee.

“Linda sent the customer next door to get me, thinking the shop is about the be robbed by these guys,” the proprietor tells the Daily Telegraph. “By the time I get in there Linda has realized who she was serving and let me know everything was all right.”

Gossip Cop has reached out to DiCaprio’s rep to verify the store owner’s account.

Ha they just talked about the incident on Access Hollywood a few minutes ago and even showed a video interview with the store owner talking about the whole incident. Way to make sure Leo never steps into his store ever again, with all his publicity mongering. :whistle:

2012 Oscar Predictions: Best Actor (written by IMDb user, Brad Brevet)

The Artist is having its first screening here in Toronto as I write this so it will be interesting once a new batch of critical reactions hit the wire for Michel Hazanavicius' silent film. I know a lot of people are rooting for it, but I don't see it being the Oscar-nominated darling everyone else does. But that's the problem with Oscar predictions, it's not at all about personal opinion, but the opinion of the Academy.

In the Best Actor category I'm not as confident as I was in my first batch of Best Actress predictions I posted yesterday. After seeing The Descendants last night I feel safe in saying George Clooney will be nominated. His performance in the film is flawless and probably the best one I've seen all year

I had originally thought he would just send someone else to pick it up for him rather than chance a pap encounter , but, I don't think he'll do that now.
