I mean even an already jaded old bore like me can't help but be dumbfounded by such ineptitude. Today Palace would have battered us were it not for Guzan but hey its all relative, they won anyway, chuckle chuckle. Michael* Posted January 2, 2014 Share Posted January 2, 2014 We showed great resilience to scrap for a win at Everton and snatch a point against Cardiff, but if ever there was a game to expose the inherent lack of quality and depth in the squad, that was it. Villa were deserved winners and our makeshift back four wobbled against Benteke and Agbonlahor (who almost always seems to save his best for games against us) throughout. Cattermole, with his first assist in two years, was the pick of the clowns, while Fletcher looked about as sharp as a pair of flares with pockets in the knees. January will be a huge month, both on and off the pitch. The fact that we're not yet cut adrift suggests that we still have an outside chance of survival, but if a late surge is going to happen, it's going to have to happen bloody quickly. Its hard not to see similarities between the two sides, chiefly that both are much more designed to counter attack than dictate the play. There's been some derision about our possession stats in recent games but the truth is that us having 52% possession is largely a waste of time, we're just not good enough to make it count. In the end for all the huff and puff it was clear when Sunderland were all out of ideas and I thought our back line stood firm (though I fear Luna is a disaster waiting to happen). It'll be interesting to see what business Poyet will conduct in the window, that Fulham game right after the cup semi-final looks pivotal at the moment. I'm certainly not one for lamenting the impatience of mad foreign owners, or pining for a time when a manager had five years to make a pig's ear of his job instead of five months, but the current culture of quick dismissals at the first sign of trouble does make it potentially difficult to separate those who know what they're doing from those who don't. If the new generation (Clarke, Mackay, Poyet etc) are never given the chance to overcome adversity, how can we ever really find out if they're up to much?
