I don't I'd put any thought into whether or not they meant it. *pretends to be a rhino*
July 11, 200618 yr im middle eastern and i've been called a terrorist and im not even muslim and i never reacted like that beforewhat he did was uncalled for, if you're a captain of a team you should let stuff like that brush off your shoulder, especially at a stage like that, the final of the world cup. you have to show an example to your team mates and people watching around the world. The Paris-based anti-racism advocacy group SOS-Racism issued a statement Monday quoting "several very well informed sources from the world of football" as saying Materazzi called Zidane a "dirty terrorist." It demanded that FIFA investigate and take any appropriate action.
July 11, 200618 yr thing is: you're paid to be a leader. millions watching. they're paid to get you off your game.it's an aspect of the game. people calling black guys monkeys. calling mothers whores. those guys shoud be punished, but if you respond, you're only punishing yourself.that's the thing with Beckham, Rooney, Zizou... you know they have that button. you press it, your odds of winning go up. for the world cup final, I'd go out there and call some Italian player any kind of slur, probably. (ok, I wouldn't, but I just think it's part of the game of strategy).
July 11, 200618 yr Henry is a great scorer. he's no leader. he's a whiner. Well, he is captain for Arsenal and with the old players retiring, there'd be a generation of young players, kind of like the Arsenal team. So it's an alright suggestion I guess... actually, it's probably more bad than good as there are a couple of problems. The most obviou6s would be the fact he performs for club but not country. Normally he leads by example and if he can't do that in a blue shirt then I guess there's no point giving him the armband. Another problem would be other potential candidates e.g. Vieira. The argument for him to lead coupled with his form and experience is much more convincing than Henry's. If there aren't any other candidates I'd support Vieira for captain Also, with Zidane and co. gone (again) what will Domenech do about the formation? Will he start guessing again and hope he gets the right combination by Euro2008?

Is it funny that FIFA don't investigate the cause of the retaliation?
July 11, 200618 yr funny? no.that's the idea of trash-talking and taunting. is that you don't get caught, the other guy does. that's why you have to be better than zizou was.man, it happens ALL the time in hockey. they never get the initiator. maybe 5% of the time.

There's no point only punishing those who retaliate.
July 11, 200618 yr hey, yer preachin' ta the choir. in fact, I bet 99% of people would agree. but they let it slide. way too often. occasionally they'll punish someone for racist stuff... but if I call your mom a name during a match, and you hit me, well I've already been punished, haven't I? but the other guy is crossing the line.like the French press said, kids might watch the final and not think anything ill of the Italians, but they see Zizou do that, and it's a bad influence. the kids have no idea what these 'grown' men are talking about

Maybe refs could look out for and warn players against provocation? They keep track of team fouls and the amount of minor fouls a player makes before they dish out a yellow for incessant fouling, so can't they just include any observed provocations as fouls as well? It is reasonable to expect people to keep themselves under control, but everybody cracks. Maybe they had a bad day or they're frustrated about losing/being behind? Also, players play in a constant state of arousal, leading to polarised emotions It's a bit much to expect athletes to ALWAYS keep a cool head. Playing in front of a massive crowd in a relatively fast-paced game, you wouldn't expect players to sit down and think everything through before they act would you? I'm not trying to justify retaliation, but it doesn't seem right to just ignore the actions of the player doing to taunting/harassing.
July 11, 200618 yr Materazzi's version is:He pulled Zidane's shirt, after which Zidane, according to Materazzi, acted arrogantly, and told him that "if you are so crazy about my shirt, you'll have to wait untill after the game to get it". After which Materazzi insulted him. But he denied the insults were directed at Zidane's mother, or that the called Zidane a terrorist.Apparently, according to some lip-readers, Materazzi said something to the extent of: "we all know your mother is a terrorist-whore".
July 11, 200618 yr I heard the version about the sister being called a whore, another one about his mother and one where he was called a terrorist. Whoever would have thought someone would take all 3 and combine them into 1.
July 11, 200618 yr I wonder if Materazzi's actions will lead to a suspension. I doubt it, as it will be hard to prove anything.
July 11, 200618 yr I wonder if Materazzi's actions will lead to a suspension. I doubt it, as it will be hard to prove anything. If FIFA wanted to do something about it, his conversation with Zidane was caught on camera. But unless lip readers can unanimously agree on what he said, then there wouldn't be any other hard evidence. The other things are Zidane's statement, which is not reliable, and his reaction to the comments made by Materazzi, which by itsels is also unreliable Unless there is other evidence that we don't know about it'd be hard to prove anything.
