All irony aside, Les Reed would give it a right good go.

Di Matteo gone, the return of thread icon Avram Grant presumably imminent. Yay!

Joe Hart is rather inexplicably painted as some kind of 'breath of fresh air' by our po faced press gang. I guess in the post-John Terry era the bar has to be lowered even further for what constitutes a 'character' in the England line-up but if chewing gum, calling a spade a spade and being mega lippy just before a penalty is the extent of it then what a sad bunch we are. I'm sure it was during the Real-City game that some ITV goblin remarked about how it was such a relief that England finally didn't have to worry about having a good keeper because they'll have Hart for the next ten years. I mean, that might turn out to be the case but the idea that its beyond question is frighteningly telling.

Proud of Dortmund's performance, in spite of the game's end.

Well, well, well; put that in your pipe and smoke it, Martin. Well done boys, particularly Big Daddy Benteke, the "Vlaark" duo, Bannan (particularly pleasing and surprising to see him play so well), Westwood (infinitely superior to Delph) and the fast, furious, claret and blue blooded Agbonlahor. God knows he needed a good showing and he's had one, two if you include Swindon in midweek.

Good grief that was dire. Nothing new was necessarily learnt about individual players but as for Lambert, well he got it frightfully wrong today, from beginning to end. Sunderland is a huge game, we have United, City and Arsenal after that so we could really do with getting one over on O'Neill. Unfortunately teams in ruts invariably improve when they cross paths with us and I expect no different next week. I'll say 1-0 Sunderland, Delph o.g 77, Bent missed penalty 88 and hope for the best.

Interesting about Johnson, if anyone should be busting a gut to 'prove a point', its him. Theoretically, Sunderland have plenty of goals in them, six in seven games looks a poor return all things considered. Not quite Aston Villa poor (six in eight), but still poor enough.

Three league wins in 2012, 17th in the table and next game a Lambert grudge match against a Norwich team coming off the back of a great win against Arsenal. Tremendous. Oh and the minor matter of Schalke winning at Dortmund. Tremendous.

Another despicable dive by Bale that the footballing fraternity shall cover up with their usual house of cards. Pretend he's from South America, guys, then maybe you'll "get it".

Devastated to only draw tonight, we completely outclassed City in every conceivable way (including, as ever, in support). Mario (G.) was outstanding, he will conquer the world one day, of that there is no doubt. Lewandowski was always due a disappointing performance, the more Man Utd references made in the build up and the more glaring shots of Sir Alex Taggart in the stands, the more certain I was that he'd have a 'mare (in fairness, most of his actual game play was at his usual incredibly high standard). His miss in the second half was simply inexplicable but I know Hannover will incur his wrath on Sunday because that's the kind of boy he is. I thought the penalty was unfair but I would say that, I guess. Real at home is beyond a big deal but I believe its winnable. And later on in “matchday 6” we'll beat City , sip champagne and forget the vapid silence of the Etihad, home of the “passionate” Poznan peddling prat brigade in sky blue.

Honestly, even though City scored right afterwards, I still had a smile on my face a mile wide. And it was a proper own goal to boot, one straight out of the Richard Dunne School for Calamitous Square Bodied Lardos.

I don't think there's any set of circumstances, hypothetical or otherwise, where Southampton 4-1 Aston Villa is an acceptable scoreline in a competitive football match. Sorry, we may be a team in transition and good luck to Nigel and his saintly boys (that should be playing in red and white stripes but aren't) but I mean, for goodness sake, if you're going to concede four goals in one half it better have been to a great team. Hopefully after our obligatory 4-0 mauling by Man City in the League Cup we can restore some semblance of dignity by picking up a win against the rancid stench they call West Brom. Surely we will.

Bring. It. On! Group D will be a right old ding dong (four actual champions, imagine that!) and I firmly expect us to put up a very credible challenge, particularly after the painstaking humiliation of last season. A win in the first game at home to Ajax is absolutely vital, set the tone for a great campaign, get to the knockouts and while we're at it, send City back to ITV4.

Great to see Nuri Sahin back, even in Liverpool colours. I had feared his move to Real would prove to be a big fat waste of time and unfortunately that's how its been (thus far), which is a crying shame given how indecently talented he is. Bad news for all you Jay Spearing fans, though (you know who you are!). (to the tune of Nobody Does It Better by Carly Simon) Nuribody does it betterrrrrrrr, makes me feel sad for the rest
