Meanwhile... A trophyless season for a team of our standing, no wonder Brian Kidd is in charge for the American tour! Congratulations to Michael!

Another season that will surely knock a few years off of my life. December through 'til Spring was about as dark a time as is possible, 8-0 Chelsea, 0-3 Wigan, not to mention the utter humiliation of 'the Bradford affair'; heck all of that made losing to Millwall feel like a trip to Hawaii. Such is life. Its hard to overstate the importance of Benteke, from November on he's been extraordinary, scoring all manner of goals, trying desperately to inspire a team that compared to him often seem like sub-species. For that Lambert gets the credit and clearly there's more to come from the likes of Lowton, Westwood and Bennett. There is a plan but ooof did it look like 'send to Championship on a shoe string' at times. Anyway, defensively we've been hopeless from the get go, as a young back four they've taken some proper tonkings but somehow they're still standing, thanks in large part to the brilliant Brad Guzan. A terrible decision by McLeish (imagine that) to let him go, I'm so pleased we brought him back and placed him as numero uno. Weimann was another bright spot, scored some great goals, works extremely hard. Agbonlahor was atrocious for the majority of the season but then turned the corner in a major way when it mattered most. He is Mr. Aston Villa and when he scores it does tend to be extremely important.

A shame that the Bundesliga season had to end with a 'miraculous' Bayern recovery and a woeful team like Hoffenheim scabbing a win against Dortmund to avoid automatic relegation. I really hope they lose the play-off, they offer the league nothing.

Wigan have won one in seven subsequent to winning back to back games at the end of March. Fair play for the FA Cup win and well earned it was too but enough's enough. Martinez should bite the hand offering him any route out of Dave Whelan's Werther's Originals soaked dungeon. .

I'll be in full on North London cockney cab driver/Hampshire day tripper/Mayfair tosspot mode for one night only tomorrow, supporting Arsene and the boys!

Ferguson will be back to 'mind the shop' at some point in the very near future and we all know it.

Stoke really could have done us a favour by putting Sunderland to the sword but of course they decided to dirge it out instead because that's the Stoke Way. Anxious home crowd with ten men and a goal behind, better sound the alarms! I hope Swansea win tonight for everyone's sake but I'm certain they won't. Hopefully Wigan's impending 45-0 FA Cup final defeat will put the genius of Roberto 'Guardiola' Martinez into much needed perspective and help usher them ever closer to their rightful home, with Manish and Steve Claridge.

Breathless final day in the Championship. Back to back relegations for our lovable friends at Wolves, not to mention the brilliantly attack minded, ultra sophisticated, gorgeously technical Peterborough. Hull are charmless but hard working, Watford are fairly suspicious but kinda fun; don't really like any of the teams in the play-offs but am fairly fascinated by the weird vibe around Leicester.

The final of finals. It simply had to be.

No, irrespective of relegation/staying up.

A fantastic evening that you could never in a million years have seen coming, frankly I'm surprised it didn't start raining chocolate coins at the end. To bring our goal difference down so much, on the back of Newcastle's tonking, feels almost fated. Except of course I know much better than that. I hope Wigan lose every game from here on out 24-0 though if we win our remaining three games we'll probably end up 9th again like in that really rubbish Houllier season. Anyway, to a man we were magnificent. Now let's see ourselves home and make sure we get all that sexy telly money for next season.

Thought we were pretty abject against Fuiham, particularly second half when our "impact" substitutions proved predictably redundant. Any 606/Talksport/cab driver gargoyle who still doesn't get why Bent and Benteke together doesn't equal tantric bliss need look no further (that's not a slight on either man, by the way). Anyway, the Sunderland result was terrible for us. I hope its Stoke or Wigan that go. Either or (not just saying that because Michael's a nice guy, though ask me after we play them in a few weeks and I might change my mind!) We just beat Stoke so I don't mind them right now but ask me most days and I'd vote for them. Dave Whelan's essentially a cartoon come to life and I'd enjoy seeing the "genius" of Roberto Martinez brought to a crashing halt. Throw in a 12-0 FA Cup final defeat while you're at it. Ah, who cares, anyone but us please.
