It's difficult to see it as anything other than a 'hail mary' play by Short, but I suppose all you can do as a fan at this point is cross your fingers and hope for the best. If Di Canio can fire a rocket up the players, scrape a win or two and drag us out of danger with time to spare, fantastic. If relegation should happen and we go down fighting, then I'd probably prefer to be in the depressing environment of the Championship with him than some old-school dullard like McLeish or McDermott. Of course, there's a good chance we'll just completely crash and burn too, but we'll have to cross that bridge if and when we come to it. One thing's for sure, it won't be boring.

Terrified beyond the capacity for rational thought. I’ve already seen countless Sunderland managers come and go, but quite honestly, this departure has upset me more than any other, not least because I really, really liked O’Neill. He seemed to have all the right credentials to take us forward, his presence was a breath of fresh air after Bruce and his well-documented childhood affinity with the club was an added bonus. Hard to say where it all went wrong - although it seems too throwaway just to say that he's lost it or that he's no good without his mate John Robertson, anyone who's watched us at any point this year would have seen a team with some very obvious and very serious shortcomings, and while the timing could hardly have been worse, Short must have been incredibly spooked at seeing a seven-point safety cushion go up in smoke within the space of six days. So here we are again, flying straight into the unknown, holding what could turn out to be a get out of jail free card or a one way ticket to the Championship. Despite a good few years' experience with this kind of nonsense, I'm completely clueless with regard to what or who's going to happen next.

I'm not altogether sure when Green Day initially broke, but yeah, I'd wager that Primal Scream are a fair bit older. Their career took off in the early-to-mid eighties and before that, Bobby was the drummer in The Jesus and Mary Chain.

^Like the sound of that one! (Y) Don't know them, but I like this a lot! What's Anna Calvi doing these days by the way? She's gotta be due for something new soon Heard a while back (probably around Christmas time-ish?) that Anna was heading into the studio to record her new album, but as far as I can tell, there's still no clue on when it might be out. There's quite a nice (not to mention free) little collection of odds and ends currently on offer to those who sign up to her official mailing list, though. I've been looking forward to the Savages album since this double a-side single came out about six months ago, and it sounds like it's finally going to arrive in the middle of May. They're a storming live act too.

The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug (2013)
Yeah, the impression I got was that 'There and Back Again' would be more of a 'bridge' between The Hobbit and Lord Of The Rings. They could certainly make use of the appendices from Return Of The King, though. The stuff set after the events of LOTR would of course sit rather awkwardly with The Hobbit, but the bits about Gandalf's backstory and the creation of the rings would work just fine.

Star Trek Into Darkness (2013)
It's still early days I guess. There may indeed be more spacey stuff going on in the movie than the trailers seem to suggest, but at the moment I'm getting the impression that they're more like a team of superheroes than explorers. Either way though, I won't be lodging any complaints. Benedict as the villain should be worth the price of admission alone.

Things That Could Make BZ Even Better
Maybe I've been on staff too long, but all I can think about is the potential for a function like that to be abused. Continuity is so vitally important on a forum like ours and a certain element of misbehaviour is unavoidable online.

The new one from Anglo-American duo Big Deal came out today. I consider their debut to be a bit of a hidden gem, though I'm not sure I like their sound quite as much with a full backing band. Still, looking forward to the album.

THE ODDITORIUM
< B U M P > Teen arrested for falsely yelling 'bingo!' in crowded hall Yelling bingo when nobody has won can get you in trouble with the law. Just ask the Kentucky man who falsely yelled “bingo” last month and was cited for second-degree disorderly conduct. As part of 18-year-old Austin Whaley’s punishment, Kenton District Judge Douglas Grothaus recently ordered the Covington man not to say the word “bingo” for six months. “Just like you can’t run into a theater and yell ‘fire’ when it’s not on fire, you can’t run into a crowded bingo hall and yell ‘bingo’ when there isn’t one,” Park Hills Police Sgt. Richard Webster, the officer who cited Whaley, told the Cincinnati Enquirer. On Feb. 9, Webster was working an off-duty security detail at a Covington bingo hall on West Pike Street when Whaley entered the hall with several other youths and yelled “bingo,” Webster said. “This caused the hall to quit operating since they thought someone had won,” Webster wrote on his citation. “This delayed the game by several minutes and caused alarm to patrons.” Webster said the crowd of mostly elderly women did not take kindly to Whaley’s bingo call. “At first, everybody started moaning and groaning when they thought they’d lost,” Webster said. “When they realized it wasn’t a real bingo, they started hooting and hollering and yelling and cussing. People take their bingo very seriously.” Had Whaley apologized for his actions, Webster said he probably would have sent him on his way with a warning. “But he refused to say he was sorry,” Webster said. “He seemed to think he could say whatever he wanted because it was a public building. I tried to explain that that’s not the case. Just because it’s a public building doesn’t give you the right to run into a theater and yell ‘fire.’ You can’t go into a ballpark and yell ‘out,’ because people could stop the game.” When Whaley appeared in Kenton District Court last week, the judge ordered Whaley: “Do not say the word ‘bingo’ for six months.” The youthful defendant could have faced up to 90 days in a jail and a $250 fine on the misdemeanor charge. So long as Whaley, who had no prior criminal record, doesn’t get into any more trouble within six months, though, the charge will be dismissed. “He was remorseful in court,” Grothaus said. “He was obviously a good kid who hadn’t been in trouble before. With all the other things that happen in the court system and the families you’re dealing with, you’ve got to keep a sense of humor.”
