  1. A few selections from a summary of a team of British scientists projections for the coronavirus: "if we relax suppression before a vaccine is administered to the entire population, COVID-19 comes right back and kills millions" "After the first suppression period ends in July, we could probably lift restrictions for a month, followed by two more months of suppression, in a repeating pattern without triggering an outbreak or overwhelming the ventilator supply. Staggering breaks by city could be better" "the team estimated it will be about 18 months until a vaccine is available. During those 18 months, things are going to be very difficult and very scary. Our economy and society will be disrupted in profound ways. And if suppression actually works, it will feel like we're doing all this for nothing, because infection and death rates will remain low" "It's easy to get people to come together in common sacrifice in the middle of a war. It's very hard to get them to do so in a pandemic that looks invisible precisely because suppression methods are working"

Looking for something to watch? The Belarusian Premier League has started its season.
  3. The other fun news from South Korea, France, US, and others is that a higher percentage of younger people have been getting sick.
  4. ^ China was wrong and misleading, but a lot happened in other countries during the month after that which should have made them realize it was serious. My main thought is that it's good to listen to the knowledgeable people. They are not perfect, but they are the best chance to understand what's happening.
  5. If more world leaders had taken the experts seriously two months ago, a number of countries would be in better situations now. If someone smarter or more knowledgeable says that something dangerous is coming, it's probably a good idea to listen instead of dismissing them.
  6. Because it's a new virus, they are constantly learning. A new study looked at patients who knew how they were infected, and 80% of the people who had infected the patients did not know they were sick when they infected them.

  8. Least shocking news of the day, but still annoying: Apparently, Russia (Putin) is behind a lot of the false coronavirus information on social media, etc.

  14. Once people see it on TV or social media, they decide they have to do it, too. Pure illogical panic.

  16. I looked around earlier for some reliable sources on the situation in China. The common assumption I found is that China is under-reporting, possibly significantly under-reporting (Iran also). Of course, we have no idea what's happening in North Korea, but since they can't travel it doesn't affect things globally. Not shocking from any of them, of course.

  19. ^ Good point, China historically under-reports in these situations.

I imagine the church hates The Young Pope / The New Pope.
  21. I do not believe I have been exposed yet, but I have had this same thought. I'm glad I don't have to make the decisions the doctors are making now.
  22. After a quick look, the ones I would nominate are already there. I will see if I can think of others. I want them.

  24. It's likely to happen in most places, probably. The thing I heard said today that made me think of it "China has over a billion people and only 80000 had/have the virus, so it's obviously not a big deal". Of course, that thought ignores the fact that China shut down the region in a way that is more difficult for democracies to duplicate. You are correct about people complaining no matter what, they love it. If the governments of the world did nothing, people would complain about how many people got sick. If governments continue as they currently are, people will complain that not enough got sick.
