  1. Reading this reminded me of something. There is a site I visit for numbers, projections etc. A while back, they said they could no longer use WHO data and switched to the ECDC. I guess I didn't think much about it, but it makes sense.
  2. You think the WHO was lying or just that they made the mistake of believing China? I really have no opinion on it as I haven't really look into it.
  3. I guess it comes down to the fact that government officials are people, too. They along with the average person had trouble accepting that this was coming. I think government officials, and individuals, around the world didn't listen to the smart people saying this was inevitable. And I understand the mentality that something is happening somewhere else so I don't need to worry about it. I read an article explaining that South Korea took it seriously early, in part because they did not act quickly with SARS many years ago, and paid for it. Not many countries had that experience to look back on. For whatever reason, I took this seriously earlier than many, but I could have easily been on the other side.
  4. There have been a number of dumb ideas of how to deal with the virus, like what the President of Belarus said. Here are two dumb ideas from this week: A) Intentionally get athletes sick because they are young and strong, then sports can start. Problems with this: 1) They can spread it 2) it's not impossible for young healthy people to die from this 3) there have been cases where people have lung damage after getting sick. B) Older people saying that grandparents would be willing to take a chance at getting sick if it meant keeping the economy going for their grandchildren. Problems with this: 1) You don't get to choose who gets sick, so you are not risking yourself but everyone, including your grandchildren who could also die. 2) If you remove social distancing to help the economy, more people die, and panic causes the economy to get worse anyway.
  5. As of yesterday, people are still crowded on some beaches in Florida, taking advantage of the inconsistency in rules/guidelines. I don't think many people take it seriously until someone in their family is infected. People keep acting like it's a thing that's happening far away, even when it's close. I hope they are not hiding how bad it is, that would be the worst case scenario. The best case may be that they were slow to react and did a bad job. (This is true of any country/city)

  7. Was looking around and noticed some things about the virus: - It has only been in South America for a month. - The first case of the virus showed up in South Korea and the US on the same day. Japan a few days earlier. - Until recently, only two African countries had the ability to test for the virus. Testing is still extremely limited. - The most populous countries with no reported cases are North Korea and Yemen. Obviously, I'm bored.

  10. At the current pace, which can speed up or slow down, next week's numbers could be around 450000+ and 8000+. And worldwide next week could be around 1.3+ million and 60000+.
  11. It would be helpful if there was a way to know the actual number of people who have been infected, but that's not possible for many reasons. The confirmed number of cases will go over a million in a couple of days, and millions a few days later.

^ That was a funny addition. It's early, but S3 has certainly been easier to follow than S2.

  17. A sequence of events up to today: - A British scientist creates a model which projects a significant number deaths. - Governments and people say "that's scary, we really need to do this social distancing thing". - As a result of the social distancing, the scientist changes his projections to account for less interactions between people. - Governments and people say "that scientist says we are safe, we should stop social distancing". - The scientist has to explain to people that projections are only down because of social distancing. If you end those policies, the projections go up significantly again.
