Memento Mori Posted January 4, 2010 Share Posted January 4, 2010 The relative merits and issues of universal service - ie, everyone has to serve in the military - are not quite the issue at stake with whatever Ms. Refaeli did or did not do. Universal service exists in Israel, and since it was not an act of civil disobedience in the sense of protest, the real issue is one of using the letter of the law to violate the spirit of the law. If I recall the facts correctly, that is. There are exceptions to service requirements; such as religious grounds, conscientious objection, and educational deferment. Bar met none of these requirements. So the debate, if there is to be one - and frankly I'm one of those readers who skips entire pages of Bar Refaeli's thread if I do not see pictures - is whether or not as a fan of Bar you condone, support, or ignore what is essentially a criminal act. The law in Israel states that everyone serves, by cynically exploiting a loophole to avoid service Ms. Refaeli clearly possessed mens rea. Personally, I am not an Israeli citizen and really do not care too much. However, to borrow from an example above - if my child gave up two years of his or her life to serve in the Israeli Defense Force and a celebrity like Bar Refaeli snuck out of it I might be quite irritated.
