June 12, 20159 yr I can understand her logic. A 3 hour soccer match can end in a 0-0 tie, whereas a baseball game generally has much more scoring. In addition, living in NYC, she would get to see a lot of ball games. Finally, since she played both soccer and softball (noted many times), perhaps (gasp) she just had more fun playing softball. I do agree that it will rile up the Twitter-verse.

June 14, 20159 yr *slides into thread for brief sports thing* It's only sort of cultural. What makes one sport boring and another fascinating is familiarity and knowledge. Baseball is dull to the unitiated because it looks like nothing is happening to folks untrained in the nuances of the game. The same is true of soccer, which to a lot of Americans--though a steadily decreasing number--looks like 20 guys kicking a ball around. That build up play (soccer), sustaining a drive (football), and working the count (baseball) are vaguely similar concepts likely eludes fans who only appreciate one sport. What's cultural is that you grow up learning the nuances of your most popular local games without applied effort, so appreciating them comes more naturally to you. Learning new games takes concerted effort. It took me years to get into soccer, and that was after I decided I wanted to.
