James Franco and Anne Hathaway will serve as co-hosts for the 83rd annual Academy Awards, producers confirmed Monday. Franco has earned critical raves for his latest film, 127 Hours, the real-life story of outdoorsman Aron Ralston who cut off part of his arm after getting it stuck under a boulder. The actor's resume includes diverse roles in Eat, Pray, Love, General Hospital, Milk and Pineapple Express. Hathaway's newest project is the much-hyped Love and Other Drugs in which she costars with Jake Gyllenhaal. She also showed off her singing and dancing chops when she performed a musical number with Hugh Jackman when he hosted the Oscars two years ago. "James Franco and Anne Hathaway personify the next generation of Hollywood icons – fresh, exciting and multi-talented," Oscar telecast producers Bruce Cohen and Don Mischer said Monday. His mother, Becky F (surname Jules Verne), is a poet, writer, editor, and his father, Douglas Eugene Franco, running a non-profit institutions, a container company; the two met at Stanford University students. Franco's father is Portuguese and Swedish descent, and Franco's mother is Jewish, a descendant of immigrants from Russia. Its not like its unique to him: Having the public ponder your sexuality is a celebrity rite of passage. But the thing that makes Franco's case so interesting is that, unlike the loud denials from some stars and even louder silences from others, the response from the 127 Hours star (who, for the record, has been in a years-long relationship with actress Ahna Reilly) is actually pretty nuanced. Franco addressed the rumor-mill mentality in an exclusive interview with EW for our recent cover story. Its funny because the way that kind of stuff is talked about on blogs is so black-and-white,Franco says. Its all cut-and-dry identity politics. ˜Is he straight or is he gay? Or, This is your third gay movie come out already! And all based on, gay or straight, based on the idea that your object of affection decides your sexuality.The actor definitely doesnt let the speculation inhibit his choice of roles; Franco™ filmography is packed with gay characters, from Allen Ginsberg in Howl, to activist Scott Smith in Milk and poet Hart Crane in his just-wrapped feature The Broken Tower. There are lots of other reasons to be interested in gay characters than wanting myself to go out and have sex with guys,he says. And there are also lots of other aspects about these characters that Im interested in, in addition to their sexuality. So, in some ways its coincidental, in other ways its not. I mean, Ive played a gay man whos living in the 60s and 70s, a gay man who we depicted in the 50s, and one being in the 20s. And those were all periods when to be gay, at least being gay in public, was much more difficult. Part of what Im interested in is how these people who were living anti-normative lifestyles contended with opposition. Or, you know what, maybe Im just gay. I remember watching him when he was on freaks and Geeks, and thinking he was HILARIOUS, also funny on Pinapple Express too. But hes turned into a really serious and talented actor love him!!
