I hear her pepsi commercial was received well :Dinah:

Worth it just for the amount of memes it created.

I agree that Kendall Jenner wasn't primarily to blame (I'm guessing it's primarily the accounts people at the ad agency since I would hope at least some of the creatives tried to stop this), but she did happily accept the job and she must have at least known what she was doing whilst they were shooting that ad.

Just like Karlie in that whitewashing job for Vogue.

Truth is, both Jenners and Pepsi knew what they were doing. Controversy sells. They didn't "miss the mark", they hit it dead center.

That's giving them far too much credit. Marketing is not run by Machiavellian masterminds, but by out-of-touch morons getting high off their own supply.

In other words, "Never attribute to malice that which can be adequately explained by stupidity."

This ad not only missed the mark, they missed it in exactly the way I'd expect a brand and a rich celebrity to miss it.

You're 100% wrong. And you clearly don't understand how world of entertainment works.

Pepsi Co. are one of the most successful companies in the world with access to best marketing agencies. If you think nobody knew this backslash would happen you're being naive.

Second culprit in the story are Kardashian clan who have mastered the art of staying in the limelight through scandals.

But sure, call them "out-of-touch morons" if you want to.

As someone who works in Communication and has worked at an ad agency, you are right. Sometimes companies do purposely create negative reception rather than positive ones b/c it generates more buzz   Not saying that was what Pepsi did but I wouldn't be surprised if that was their intention.

I'm comfortable standing by my position, accusations of naivete or appeals to authority notwithstanding. But that's enough for this thread.

You think Coca Cola or Pepsi would even contemplate marketing like this?

^  My Rammy Sense led me to this thread :shifty:  And the answer is probably no b/c, although the message in the song is true, it is a bit too controversial that it is not worth their time or the risk. But who knows :idk:

In my view tho,it appears the mesage was pepsi was aiming at is : consumerism is our shared creed and consequently it is the best guarantee of  social cohesion. Like everybody can have a soda and go home  at the end of day in good spirits. Such line of reasoning can only appear to us as stupid, BUT it used to be the prevailing world view until very recently. Much of the mainstream liberal critique  of ex-communist  regimes was grounded in such logic. Well, nowadays consumerism runs rampant in almost every society, but  state power has somehow gotten even more repressive :/
