At least we're both happy with the current situation

Went to the doctors. I have acute recurring bronchitis brought on by allergies... meaning this is going to continue to be a thing so long as I live here... I was NEVER sick in California... now I'm sick every 3 months for a month and the greatest thing, I got an allergy shot and it's legit done fuck all. I'm on allergy meds that I bought from Amazon and it takes the edge off, so far that cheap allergy meds are working 100% better then the doctors shot.

I've taken classes on Heidegger a couple of years ago, but I haven't read the source material. I didn't really enjoy it at the time (or maybe my other interests were too big and overshadowed it). People told me that I would like Heidegger's take on science and technology, but I didn't find it that much exciting at the time. Maybe, I'll give it another try in a couple of years.

I've been working through Simon C's lectures on Heidegger and so far it sounds like the way an alien would describe consciousness and the present moment.  Boring, weird, extremely confusing, yet provoking curiosity at the same time.  Seems useless so far, but I will still finish the lecture because it's a lot shorter than the Dreyfus lecture.  The Dreyfus lecture on youtube is a full semester (40 hours) long.

I don't understand why this is the most important and influential work of philosophy in the the past 100 years.  (In terms of a practical rather than an academic sense).

Once Common COMEGALULre  became a thing in the state my nephew lives in, he was taken out of public school and put into private school. I can't for the life of me understand why teaching 1+3 = 4 is a bad thing. Oh and here's the thing... my friends who live in Silicon Valley say this new group of coders/engineers coming in are struggling to relearn normal math  and they're finding what they've learned just isn't practical in the real world.

Fuck Common COMEGALULre

That's not whay I got from his words. I don't see it as a painful path and I don't remember him arguing that it needs to be full of suffering and hardship. He says that what doesn't kill you makes you stronger, but he doesn't mean that you should seek suffering.

Deviating from the herd means questioning the values of values. It doesn't mean that all these values are wrong and I don't see it as a way to cut ties with everybody. It's not a condescending way of seeing the world. At least, I don't see it that way. It's more a promise for yourself to get better, it's not a way to despise others.

PS: you don't have to agree with everything he says to benefit from his books. Just cherry-pick and take what you want out of it. As I said, that's what I did. For me, it's not a system, it's not "all or nothing", you can take things and leave others.

It does seem that Existentialism is somewhat of potpourri of ideas with the strongest themes being Amor Fati and uncovering the true self (Authenticity and the dangers of non-authenticity).

I finished Prof. Dodson's lecture on Nietzsche, Camus, and Dostoevsky's existential philosophy.  It seems that Albert Camus and D's work focused on their own version of Nietzsche's "Love your fate".  I will probably start Nietzsche's works in a couple of days.

What I was getting at was that these core concepts of Nietzsche are offensively oriented (in terms with engagement with the world) however I saw some fault lines going- particularly in the area of resilience (defensive strength) and also how difficult it is to actually execute his theories in real life practice.  The theories are intriguing but I look back at my own experience and other's experience and it looks like a recipe for alienation to me.  You know what I am getting at right?

+  Even after listening to Dodson's lectures I still feel the same way.  In Victor Frankl's "Man's search for meaning" there is perhaps the most powerful recollection of this with certain Jews reorienting their sense of meaning in the new conditions.  Still, actually pulling off the superman and amor fati has problems .  The Buddhist approach to resilience makes a lot more sense to me.  Maybe Buddhism for resilience and then mixed with the superman & amor fati for offensive engagement in the world makes more sense.

@Cult Icon Have you seen how they treat Jin when he dies in GOT?? The Mongols disrespect his body like crazy  They hit him on the ground, kick him like a foot ball... I'm wondering if at some point they will spit or pee on it

That's the first time I see sth like that in a game. The 1st time, I thought it was a bug in the AI, but they do it every time.

BTW, I like GoT so far. Pretty solid game. Not perfect (no game is), but still a great experience. I play on the hardest difficulty, but it's not a very hard game. When you compare it to Sekiro, it's super easy. In GoT, the timing is very forgiving. You can parry even if your timing is shit. In Sekiro, if you're one millisecond too late or too early, you're screwed.

I don't even use an armor, I'm just with the traveler attire and I still manage to do fine most of the time.

I like Camus. I haven't read many of his books but I enjoyed them and I saw many videos/reports on his life: he was a really great guy. He's much better than his "rival" Sartre (who is nutjob and a freaking liar IMHO).

I see what's troubling you, but as a reader you can takewhat you want from his books. Take what inspires or strengthens you. I don't see his philosophy as a system where you have to agree with everything or nothing. Just cherry pick the best things for you and discard the rest.

I mean the guy literally became nuts at the end of his life... so he's not perfect, but he helps you to build solid tools to analyse our world (thanks to his meticulous deconstruction of Western moral systems and its debunking of hidden resentment), tools to love your fate (amor fati) and tools to increase your vitality / life force.

BTW, I blame many of the post WWII communist intellectuals. In the 1800s or beginning of the 1900s, I understand why people were interested in communism. But after 1953 or in the 60s - 80s, no.

Many intellectuals were invited in the USSR and China in the 60s - 80s. They knew what was happening there (the West had partial information on their situation, but many things transpired - like the camps, the massacres, the poverty - and even if the "tours" were organized by the propaganda, many managed to see what was hidden behind the curtain). Those who said nothing did it to protect "the cause".

Sartre knew about Mao's lunacies, but he said nothing. For the freaking "cause". Because he felt guilt, he was ashamed of his "bourgeois" origins, so it made him a blind zealot.  There are still many ppl like him today. Usually, it's kids, but some of them never grow up.

This is why combat sports are much better than basketball or American football (that are basically corrupted by extremists now).

People with common sense.

@CandleVixen @Stromboli1 It's getting worse for Disney Star Wars. After John Boyega, now it's Daisy Ridley who calls them out. She says Kathleen Kennedy and her minions had no plan (which we knew already ). The mouse is a real b***, they screwed up so badly that even their actors can't stand them.

Disney has really been stupid for the past year. Let's remember:

- The wonderful "Rise of Palpatine",

- The new new woke warriors (with Safespace, Snoflake, the Internet gas and all that trash),

- Mulan has been shot in Xinjiang where the Uyghurs are being oppressed and Disney thanked the dept that deports the Uyghurs in the credit. So very progressive :banghead:

- now they already say they have a replacement for Chadwick Boseman (how disrespectful and insensitive - that's quite revolting TBH) and of course the character will be gender swapped (because "of course" men are trash).

So, what am I thinking right now? Well, I think that you are a disgusting company, Disney.
