J. Edgar’ a captivating portrayal

An intriguing story about a man who was at odds with himself and, in fact, his country at times, "J. Edgar" paints a portrait of the first director of the FBI.

Leonardo DiCaprio is terrific as the overzealous lawman with an overbearing mother (the always-marvelous Judi Dench) and a mysterious sexual identity. Clint Eastwood masterfully directs the film that moves backward and forward in time to unveil snippets of J. Edgar Hoover's private and public lives.

Hoover is seen as a younger man in his quest to hunt down "communist radicals" and anarchists such as Emma Goldman (the audience sees her briefly while delivering a speech). Hoover also went on to track down some of the most infamous of Prohibition-era criminals, and we see him at work, where he often takes credit for arrests he himself did not make.

He hires as his deputy director Clyde Tolson (Armie Hammer, "The Social Network"), who impresses Hoover with his good looks and confidence. Although no one can be certain about Hoover's physical relationship with Tolson, they certainly were dear friends who spent a lot of time together. We also see the ties Hoover had with his loyal secretary, Helen Gandy (Naomi Watts).

DiCaprio is wonderful as Hoover and portrays him as a man who wants to fight against many perceived threats - some of them within himself. We can't be certain about his physical attraction for Tolson, but we can guess that Hoover's mother, who tells him in so many words that she would rather have a dead son than a gay son, could have had such a hold on the man that he couldn't bring himself to act on his impulses.

The history of the times through which Hoover lived comes alive in a variety of encounters and crime scenes, the most powerful of which is Hoover's investigation into the kidnapping of the Lindbergh baby. Eastwood cleverly mixes real footage into newsreels the characters watch to create an authentic atmosphere, and he de-saturates the color to make give the movie a "vintage" feel.

Although the show depicts criminal justice specialists at work, it's far from an action flick. At times it drags a bit here and there because it is so intensely dialogue-driven.

Still, it's an interesting portrayal of complex man, and it's no mystery why this high-quality biopic could very well be mentioned when talk of the Academy Awards begins.

Sick I begin to believe that she put those pics on facebook with a single purpose: Publicity

That's exactly what I was thinking.

Hey Girls talking about dirty game to win an Oscar, I was reading the column Lainey Gossip... So apparently the Brad Pitt is saying that in three years, he retired from acting. My first thought was: And who the hell cares, you're a terrible actor, as bad as your movies, but then she mentioned something... This is perhaps a campaign to finally the academy give him the Oscar? Some people have no shame, and if anyone knows how to manipulate the press and take advantage of all publicity, are these two, the Brangelina brand.

Please god don't let that happen... A gwyneth paltrow case

Is he waiting for a farewell? Receive calls for him to give up and keep going? If for lack of goodbye...

 Brad Pitt.

Hey girls! Thanks for all the new pix and news and twitters.

Yes, to those who asked in PM- I saw J Edgar and I liked it a LOT! Leo was awesome, no lie, I would say this even if I weren't a big fan. If he doesn't at least get an Academy nomination or win some awards at the top awards given, if not the Oscar, it would be a CRIME! Some things I didn't like as much- like others have said, the makeup job on Armie was unfortunate, took away from the movie, and yeah, I could see that for a lot of movie-goers who are into simple plots and simple ideas, this movie will not appeal to them. I think Leo's performance here is better than in The Aviator, which is closest as far as the role and the film, to J Edgar.

I HATE her but like DListed, have to read her - Lainey's comments on who she thinks has a chance at People's Sexiest Men - here's her comments about LEO:

Sexiest Man Alive 2011

Arguments for:

-Oh he’ll hide under his smelly baseball cap and tell you he’s not interested in an Oscar but of course he’s interested in an Oscar. That’s the whole point of the game. And right now, with J Edgar, there’s a good chance at a nomination. Doesn’t hurt if he goes into the race winning the SMA popularity contest

-Leonardo DiCaprio became the Heartthrob who became the Actor. It’s an impressive accomplishment that all of them, Efron, Pattinson, Timberlake, etc etc etc, all of them are trying to emulate. He’s the template.

-But you look at him and you still see Jack Dawson, don’t lie. He would give up his life-raft for you.

-He’s very, very connected, very powerful, if he wanted it, all he’d have to do, literally, is say the word.

-Blake Lively played his ass. She’s now sleeping with the outgoing SMA, Ryan Reynolds, who took a sh-t at the box office this summer, TWICE. Would be kinda fun to send a f-ck you right back, take his title, go to the Oscars, and turn around and ask her about those apples, right?

Arguments against:

-There is nothing holding Leo back except Leo. I mean, sure, some people may not be into his modelising etc, but like I said, if he wanted it? PEOPLE Magazine would NEVER deny Leo DiCaprio. At 37, he’s primed for it now. Perfect age. But the question with Leo and the SMA has always been: does he want it? He tried so hard to lose Titanic. He hated the pinup reputation. He won’t do romances. He can barely stand to kiss onscreen. And now this? Remember that the SMA has to be accepted. They won’t push it on you. You have to say Yes. And when you do, you have to give back a little something. An interview, a smile, some flirt. I don’t know that Leo can go there. I don’t know that he has to. What went down with Blake Lively will pass. And I just don’t see him breaking with his own personal ideology and bending over to be the SMA when he’s never really needed it before.

Odds: 6 to 1

She thinks Timberlake is gonna be it - UGH!

I hate this columnist... she can only beat and beat people :yuckky:. I don't read her site.

Justin Timberlake?   ... NOOOOOOOOOO <_< .

Who cares who is the sexiest for these people... he's the sexiest for his fans, US.

Leo has talent, he doesnt need go around taking off his shirt to show up... that's for untalented actors.

Thanks, Solange.

Solange in opinion, I think it's between Leo and Justin, because this year has been highly publicized either on their romances, their breakups, their movies (in the case of justin makes me laugh to mention it "movies" )

her other options... Brad? really? :/4 out of 5 women hate him for those comments he made about Jennifer Aniston,

Not to mention that this year is more awful than ever. That disgusting beard :yuckky:

well his sky diving fail is known for us,but I really didn't know he's into bunjee jumping or river rafting :idk:

old article :p

HEART-throb Leonardo DiCaprio cheated death in a sky-diving drama just days before he began filming Titanic.

The actor's parachute failed to open as he plummeted 12,000 feet at 120 mph.

The dare, to celebrate a friend's 21st birthday, turned to terror as he zoomed past his mates.

DiCaprio, 23, told biographer Nancy Krulik how he freaked out: "We were free-falling. At 5,000 feet instructor Harley Powell, who was strapped to me, yelled to pull the ripcord.

"Nothing happened. But I wasn't aware anything was wrong.

"I realised we were in trouble when we flew past my pals who were floating softly to the ground."

Twenty three seconds later the back-up chute was released by Powell.

The nightmare plunge in June 1996 - less than a week before working on Titanic - is revealed in DiCaprio's biography.

A friend said: "Leo and his pals are addicted to bungee jumping and river rafting. Sky-diving was out of their league but no-one wanted to look wimpy."

Yeah, I agree, like Lainey pointed out whoever People designates as Sexiest Man Alive, the person would have to agree to do certain things like pose for the cover and an interview and i DOUBT Leo will do that - why would he need to or want to?

As far as Lainey, she's shown me, she really doesn't know sh_t and doesn't have any inside info and her constant comments the Blake "played" Leo is laughable to me. I mean, come on - how can anyone buy that? If she really did that, I would feel very very sorry for Ryan Reynolds that his g/f would be capable of doing that or if he (Ryan) was also in on it, well, my opinion of him would be even lower than for her. What guy lets a woman that he is into, go out with another guy, even if it were just for image/publicity? See, makes no sense.
