Leonardo DiCaprio’s crusade: Vote 4 Stuff

Leonardo DiCaprio finds time to be national chairman of Earth Day and a director of the Natural Resources Defense Council even while delivering Oscar nominated performances for such directors as Martin Scorsese and Clint Eastwood.

He has now, with his production company Appian Way, launched a youth-directed campaign called Vote 4 Stuff.

It consists of videos calling on young people to use social media in the last month of the campaign, outflanking candidates’ negative TV commercials and saying what issues they want discussed in election 2012.

“We are using the power of social media throughout the Vote 4 Stuff campaign to incite bipartisan conversation around real issues, encourage registration and voting in November,” DeCaprio told the Associated Press.

Americans under 35 are the nation’s most progressive but least reliable voters, studies of the electorate show.

Other young actors doing Vote f4 Stuff videos include Tobe MaGuire, Zac Efron, Selena Gomez, Sarah Silverman, and Jason Gordon Levitt.

DiCaprio’s politics are a little to the left of those of the man he most recently played in the movies, the late FBI Director J. Edgar Hoover.

Leonardo DiCaprio and Selena Gomez Want You to "Vote 4 Stuff," So You Will

Leonardo DiCaprio, Tobey Maguire and Selena Gomez are trying to get younger people, like me, I guess, to vote. I don't care if stars want me to vote, so will this work?

—Aubree, Oklahoma, via Facebook

Right now you're thinking that those new PSAs from the stars of Titanic, Spider-Man and Wizards of Waverly Place—along with Jonah Hill, Sarah Silverman and Ellen DeGeneres—cannot possibly have an influence on what you'll be doing on Nov. 6. You'll do whatever you want on Nov. 6, dammit.

But you're wrong. These people are worming their way into your subconscious as I write. By the time voting day comes around, you will be camped out in front of your local church/school/community center bright and early and ready to make your political wishes known. Because The Leo wills it. And I can prove it.

In the new PSA, called, intelligently enough, "Vote 4 Stuff," Leo promises youth that you can vote for "anything you want."

"Dogs will pick up my poop with a plastic bag," Hill also suggests. "See how they like it."

Well, no. Not really. You can vote for any number of people on a list. But still, the point is clear: You have choices.

But does the message work? After all, Leo is not the dreamy young string bean he was in Titanic, and Tobey hasn't painted himself into a skintight hero suit in five years. Both are 37, not exactly peers to the group they're trying to influence.

But according to people who know, they—along with the more obvious Gomez—still have a hold on people of college age.

"We live in an era where younger voters don't generally like, trust or look up to politicians, but they view A-list celebs with great reverence," Republican strategist and former presidential campaign advisor Ford O'Connell tells me. "While this video may seem odd to older voters, it is still more effective for the president than delivering a policy speech on the issues."

(The campaign is nonpartisan, but O'Connell, for his part, says the video will do much more good for President Barack Obama than challenger Mitt Romney.)

And in case that isn't enough proof for ya, fine: Maybe you'll trust some numbers.

Among young people between 18 and 24, a whopping 95 percent know who Leo is, according to the Davie Brown Index. And yes, that's big. After all, only 76 percent know who Tobey is. Still, both of the actors are considered very influential to about 73 percent of the population surveyed by the DBI—73 percent who may or may not vote otherwise.

So go out and vote next month, if for no other reason, it'll make Leo happy. And we all know that his happiness is all you think about, ever.

Leonardo DiCaprio Kicks Off IFAW's Animal Action Week

Actor and activist Leonardo DiCaprio joined IFAW (International Fund for Animal Welfare – www.ifaw.org) today in calling for the world community to step up efforts to save elephants from poaching and the illegal ivory trade, which have escalated dramatically in recent years.

"In 2011 an unprecedented 24.3 tons of ivory was seized by government authorities worldwide, the largest amount recorded since the 1989 ivory ban. Tragically this trend is continuing in 2012," said DiCaprio, an IFAW Honorary Board member. "Widespread poaching is being recorded throughout Africa, even in areas in southern Africa that were previously considered safe for elephants."

DiCaprio serves as global ambassador for IFAW's Animal Action program – an international public awareness and education initiative that reaches more than five million young people and their families in more than 18 countries worldwide each year. Now in its 20th year, the campaign empowers young people around the globe to speak and act on behalf of animals.

"We are thrilled to join forces again with Leonardo in our mission to help elephants live safely in the wild," said IFAW Executive Vice President Azzedine Downes. "His commitment to advocating for the wellbeing of elephants is vital in our efforts to educate and inspire the next generation of conservation leaders."

Last year, IFAW's Animal Action program mobilized more than 50,000 students to sign pledges, create art, and write letters to help advance IFAW's work protecting elephants from poaching, habitat loss and other threats.

While the 1989 ivory ban caused a decline in the number of elephants killed by poachers, recent years have seen a surge in mass killings of the world's largest land animals. In the past year alone, an estimated 3,000 elephants were slaughtered for their ivory.

Supported by international criminal syndicates, the ivory is most often smuggled from Africa to China, and sold for huge profits which can fund regional conflicts before being carved into highly sought after trinkets and jewelry.

"Elephants are in crisis once again. We must come together to reduce demand for ivory in China and other countries, and to protect elephants where they live," added DiCaprio. "We cannot continue decimating elephants and other species for products nobody needs."

To date, more than 280,000 adults have joined IFAW's Elephant March social media campaign (www.elephantmarch.com) to promote a groundswell of public support for ending all trade in ivory.

Animal Action Campaign

The Animal Action elephant campaign provides free education packs and films in eight languages plus Braille for ages 5-18. The IFAW program also organizes youth, advocacy activities and special events around the world that celebrate elephants, introduce young people to the threats they face and empower them to take action. In the U.S., Animal Action education programs reach more than 100,000 classrooms each year. For materials and more information visit www.ifaw.org/lessons.
