J. Edgar Will Skip TIFF & NYFF;Best Exotic Marigold Hotel Won't Do The Festival Circuit At All

As Venice and TIFF have unveiled the bulk of their lineups, there has been one glaring omission: Clint Eastwood's “J. Edgar." Already primed with an awards season release and red carpet-ready cast, the Leonardo DiCaprio starrer seemed a no brainer for the festival circuit, but it looks like just making its release date is going to be a challenge. Peter Howell of The Toronto Star blogged yesterday that the film would be skipping both Toronto and New York in a move that made it seem like it was forgoing the festival run completely,

(she's a big fan also)

You have recently been featured in Contributor Magazine N°3. Which magazines do you like to read in your free time ?

I am a huge GQ fan. Always have been. I love man fashion magazine’s. Besides- It is so much more than about fashion. It’s a lifestyle magazine.

Can we look forward to seeing more new editorial work of you soon ?

Yes I have done alot of work which hasn’t been published yet. I worked for “Schön” magazine a few months ago , but it hasn’t been published yet. I shot 13 pages for ”Candy” Magazine as a young Leonardo DiCaprio, which was really fun since I’m a hardcore DiCaprio fan. It would be fun seeing the results of that.

Thanks oxford and halolulu by the tweets.

That's cool! Leo singing Sinatra at karaoke with Kevin... really funny  .

Leo is already training for the role of Sinatra in theaters? Hmm... I think it was just for fun, but would be nice to watch him playing this great singer. Epic!

Ah... Kevin and Leo? A few months since we read about the two together at a party... was missing.

The reigning box office king is Leonardo DiCaprio, who became, according to Forbes, a $77 million man after back-to-back 2010 blockbusters: “Shutter Island” and “Inception.” In 2001 he started his company, Appian Way, as part of a venture with Initial Entertainment Group, which bankrolled Martin Scorsese’s “Gangs of New York.” (The ancient Roman route the Appian Way is not far from Cinecittà, where “Gangs” was shot.) “Leo really wants to find material and develop it himself,” Graham King, then running I.E.G., said. Mr. King signed a deal with Warner Brothers in 2005, and the studio had a bite of “The Aviator” and “The Departed” (both directed by Mr. Scorsese and starring Mr. DiCaprio).

Appian Way is still at Warner Brothers but works with other studios too: it made “Red Riding Hood,” almost made Michael Mann’s “Public Enemies” and cuts deals that bring it fat producing fees, like the one that’s supposed to turn Malcolm Gladwell’s “Blink” into a film. Feeding the studio pipeline helps keep Mr. DiCaprio at the top, as do his career moves. “DiCaprio is someone who successfully changed his brand,” Michael Vollman, a big marketing gun for UA/MGM, told the Hollywood Reporter in 2010. “He was Robert Pattinson during ‘Titanic.’ He was that guy that every girl pinned her hopes and dreams on. Now he’s a man with a presence on screen that you can’t take your eyes off. He’s successfully gone from one brand to another.”

Bankability is not what it used to be, partly because movies are not what they used to be. I don’t mean that they’re not as good (in some ways they’re better) but rather that television has eroded movies’ monopoly on talent and prestige. We have more kinds of celebrities than we used to, and also more platforms for actors who want creative challenges and a measure of artistic control as well. Lately a number of prominent screen actors — in particular women, tired of playing the Mom or the Girl in popcorn movies — have stretched out in cable series, mini-series and movies. I’m thinking of Claire Danes in “Temple Grandin,” Laura Linney in “The Big C,” Kate Winslet in “Mildred Pierce,” Glenn Close in “Damages,” among others. There’s no question that the cachet of these performers helped get the projects made and also drew audiences. So while they may not have the box office clout of Angelina Jolie or Mr. DiCaprio, they have some kind of star power.

I was thinking... will we ever see Leo attend one of these mini-series for television? It would be very interesting.

Whoops Nanda beat me to it. Thanks Nanda! :flower: But new page so I'll leave it here...

Q. Do you believe that there are any reliably bankable actors left in Hollywood, or has the star system model become completely obsolete in this day and age? Blockbusters are obviously marketed based more on their concept and effects than on their casts. Why do you think there's been this shift of focus away from the actor? ETHAN GATES

MANOHLA DARGIS Stardom can look cheap in the age of Snooki, but movie stars do still matter at the box office, and a system of sorts exists, even if it doesn't work like the one that turned Lucille Fay LeSueur into Joan Crawford. Stars no longer have to sign the kind of restrictive contracts under which they, producers, directors and writers once toiled, but instead operate as independents, if ones loaded with dependents. Some of the biggest have their own companies (shingles or banners) and producing deals with the studios. Clint Eastwood's Malpaso has been at Warner Brothers forever, and Brad Pitt

Whoops Nanda beat me to it. wave.gif Thanks Nanda! Flower for you.gif But new page so I'll leave it here...

No problem, joujou. All girls for Leo, is what matters.

I was thinking the same thing recently. Most of them are dramas, which he already has an abundance of on his feature film plate, but series like The Big C, Nurse Jackie, Weeds, et. al show cable is better at comedy (albeit dark comedy) than the movies these days. If Leo ever wants to do a good comedy, cable might be the place. But it would have to be a really good one!

Yes, I was thinking on a drama... like Kate Winslet. But a comedy would be really cool. I agree with you, would have to be a really good comedy.

Thanks for the article about The Great Gatsby  .
