This war (5/6) is getting really weird.
1. Russians are making slow gains in the Donbass/South but retreating in the Kharkiv region, which they left a skeleton crew to hold. It's like they took Kharkiv hostage and used the region as a diversionary area to prevent the Ukrainians from reinforcing the East and South.
2. Ukr Gov't/Military is claiming that Putin is close to declaring war on Ukraine. The 9th of May is supposed to be the day he does it. We'll see.. Total collapse of peace talks in the near-term.
3. Massive increase of US military aid to Ukraine to the level of a proxy war and big help with US intelligence services & satellites. However the US aid is unlikely to effect the situation on the ground in the near term (coming weeks) as the equipment needs to be integrated with trained troops. And the polygot of equipment Ukraine got from Allied nations is going to be a maintenance and logistics mess, it is unlikely they will get the most out of what they have been given. The most valuable equipment they received were the US/NATO self-propelled howitzers.
4. The Russians continue to pursue their objectives on a razor edge, and with relatively few forces. Massively outnumbered by the Ukrainians in infantrymen while having great superiority in air support, equipment and firepower. It is unlikely that the NATO/US aid will reverse the Russian material superiority.
At the same time, without declaring war on Ukraine the Russian infantry inferiority will persist and cripple offensive operations. It seems like they are stuck in some critical areas and advancing at a snail's pace.
