  3. According to this journal article, in 2016 the Russian 152mm GPS/GLONASS-enabled artillery shell cost $1,000. The U.S./ NATO 155mm M982 Excalibur artillery shell cost about $80,000 to manufacture. In 2022 the cost of Excalibur has been significantly reduced though. Charles K. 10. The scouring of the shire is a strong and essential part of the LOTR. I can understand why Jackson removed it as it could be seen as 'too much' for the mass audience, but it has profound implications for the characters and their endings.

  14. The Russian Way of Warfare: A Primer (rand.org) 2017 comparison between US brigade and a Russian brigade, the decisive difference is in artillery. US Brigade has 18 155mm SP howitzers, the Russian Brigade has 36 x 152mm SP howitzers and 18 x 122mm SP MLRS organic. The Russian artillery is also longer ranged than the American. Besides this there are separate artillery brigades in the Russian force structure that have heavier equipment, like SP 203mm guns and 300mm SP MLRS with satellite guided rocket projectiles. The advantage of the US however is that the US Brigade combat team is composed of professional soldiers. The Russian Brigade, in a war scenario, would have its infantry ranks composed mainly of reservists and trained conscripts. The professionals would be the leaders, tankers, artillerymen, logistics, specialists etc. So the Russian infantrymen would be of a lower standard than the US. The significant difference in artillery would have to be made up by US corps artillery and US airpower. The Russian doctrine is extremely artillery dominated, while in US thinking they see artillery as a supporting arm, the Russians see it as the decisive arm. Russian infantry and tanks support the artillery, not the other way around. The US and US culture in general (and entertainment, movies, games, etc.) on the other hand are the opposite, they fetishize elite infantry and spec ops to the point where the US has a special forces army. In the Ukraine the pop observers have failed to notice the 900 pound gorilla- that the Russian combat battalions are very good at defense. They have defeated all Ukrainian counterattacks except for one at Kharkiv, and this was due to the thin defenses more than anything else. The recent defeat of two Ukrainian brigades in the south by one encircled Russian battalion is case in point- the Ukr brigades pincered the battalion, and the Russian response was to saturate the Ukr brigades with superior artillery fire and force them to retreat. They achieve a routinely solid defense despite the Ukr's vast, many multiples superiority in raw infantry numbers. I believe this is due to the work of the Russian artillery, which defeats Ukr attacks at the staging/assembly areas (with missile and air strikes at times) and at the approach. The Russian infantry/spetznaz troopers are mainly the forward observers for the artillery, until they are ordered to move up and seize shattered areas with tank support.
