Interstellar (2014)
I left feeling a little unsatisfied, if I'm honest. In a story dealing mostly with the bleakness of a post-apocalyptic world and our struggle to survive there, the convenience of the way everything was resolved just sat a bit uncomfortably with me. There was a lot to like about it, the emotional stuff seemed pretty genuine and the sheer scope and ambition of the project was positively awe-inspiring at times, but I wouldn't put it up there with the best of Nolan's output.

From what I saw in those two episodes, the plan was probably always for it to be an ongoing series, because it adopts the ‘monster of the week’ formula quite a bit, sending David Duchovny and, erm, the other one after more bog standard criminals than Manson. I'd like to think, if it's renewed for a second season, that it'll delve into Manson's motivations a lot more, but I'm not really holding out much hope.

Hung on in there for a potentially valuable point. Toivonen made a difference when he came on, and with Lens scoring again and M'Vila also finding the net, you'd have to say the new boys are doing their bit so far. The old guard, not so much. Cattermole has been responsible for most of the goals we've conceded this season and Jones was all over the shop, while Graham and Fletcher would struggle to score for the Blue Bell. Will we able to bring in reinforcements before the window closes? Will we ever keep another clean sheet? What is a Jack Rodwell? All questions I don't envy Advocaat for having to try and answer. Fred, your thoughts on the game? I was impressed with Sinclair...

Fantastic Four (2015)
It's not every day that a director disowns a movie before release. In fairness to Trank, the leaked outline of what he initially proposed was streets ahead of what became the end product. I doubt his original version will ever see the light of day though, so whether or not those ideas could have been funneled into a coherent story or translated to the big screen, we'll probably never know.

I was excited about this one, but ended up switching it off after two episodes. A story about a detective searching for a young girl who’s become mixed up with the Manson Family is a brilliant idea for a prestige TV series, but at heart, it's as safe and conventional as cop shows come. It doesn't have anything interesting or different to say about Charles Manson, or anything else for that matter. Huge missed opportunity.

Rush (2013)
From what I can gather, he was pretty big news at the time. I've been told that 'Rush' only hints at the wilder side of his personal life, and that the stories of what he got up to are so numerous and outlandish, they sound more like folklore than fact. The movie seemed to concentrate more on his reputation as a competitor, probably as an intentional counterbalance to his notoriety away from the racing track.

Fantastic Four (2015)
Glutton for punishment, I guess. Truth be told, I went into it hoping against hope that there might be at least some fun to be had. Unfortunately, the one thing that really stood out about it was just how aggressively dull it was. When a superhero story gets less interesting after the lead characters get their powers, you know you're dealing with something problematic. It looks like the public have pretty much shunned the film en masse, too. Not surprising I suppose, audiences like to be entertained and there are a ruck of other comic book movies out there that offer more excitement. I even saw a post online claiming that the overall takings, when adjusted for inflation, have been lower than for the notoriously dreadful 'Howard The Duck' so far. Can't vouch for the accuracy of that, but what a thought it would be for Fox if true.

That incident was deplorable. Less than two weeks into a new season and Mourinho has already managed to come across as a bully, a sexist and a control freak. I'd like to have seen his reaction if Eden Hazard, undoubtedly Chelsea's most influential player, had been lying there with a serious injury and the medical staff had stayed off the pitch. Still, I look forward to seeing Hazard banned from playing against City due to his poor game management.

True Detective
On balance, I think a higher level could have been reached had it been pared down to six episodes instead of eight, to keep it moving at a better pace. The finale was a perfect example of that, the first ten minutes were pure padding and indulgent soul-searching, which brought the narrative to a complete standstill. Overall, Pizzolatto was probably hampered by his own ambitions. It reminded me at times of reading a potentially good novel, but one in desperate need of a decent editor. Positives for me were the music, the sense of place and the acting too, for the most part. Vaughn was devoid of subtlety, but both Farrell and McAdams impressed me. Although I was disappointed that Ani was reduced to the role of a doting girlfriend when up to that point, she'd been as much a part of the action as anyone.

Fantastic Four (2015)
Has anyone braved watching it yet, then? My curiosity got the better of me last night and I had a look. I wouldn't say it was an abomination by any means, certainly not a flop on the level of Batman & Robin or Elektra, just underwhelming and very, very pedestrian. The pacing is dreadfully misjudged, it spends ages exploring the backstories of the four leads, which I wouldn't usually consider a bad thing, except that it doesn't do enough to make any of them engaging. The only real drama happens about a quarter of an hour from the end when Von Doom (despite what Toby Kebbell originally stated, he's never referred to as 'Domashev', which I'm guessing was one of the main bones of contention between Josh Trank and Fox) returns from 'Planet Zero', but by that point it's difficult to care what happens next. It's far too little, far too late. All of which is a great shame, because I was really rooting for them to get it right. To waste such a talented young cast is bordering on criminal.

Depending on which member of the media one listened to, he was magically going to be worth anything from 10-15 extra points to Arsenal's title tilt. I believe the Cech-ometer stands at -3 for the season so far. The uninitiated could be forgiven for thinking that Wenger had been playing an untested kid beforehand and was just waiting for someone to come along who could catch a ball, when in actual fact his back four had already tightened up quite a bit in front of David Ospina last year.
