THE CAPTAIN WANTS TO PLAY

Carlo Ancelotti and the boys were back training hard today, with Paolo Maldini taking part in almost the whole session

The team started today’s training with a round of applause for Zeljko Kalac’s contract extension. This session is the first of a long and important week for the Rossoneri.

After a series of stretching and lunges on the upper field, Carlo Ancelotti handed out the training jerseys for a 10-against-10 ball possession exercises on the vertical axis of the half pitch. Ronaldo did not take part in this exercise, but followed personalized work. Kakha Kaladze and Leandro Grimi also did not take part but worked in the gym instead. Amongst the twenty participating players were Paolo Maldini, Alessandro Nesta and Serginho. The team closed the session with a seven-against-seven practice game with two goals on the half pitch. Rino Gattuso worked on technical exercises with coach Mauro Tassotti and then practiced shots on goal with the keepers.

The team will return to training tomorrow at 15 CET on the eve of the important Champions League clash with Celtic.

MALDINI BELIEVES

Paolo Maldini has his eyes on the Champions League final and in the meantime is pushing ahead for a derby victory against Inter on Sunday

Paolo Maldini spoke on Milan Channel about the satisfaction of the Champions League qualification and how he has always believed in the final in Athens.

‘To be honest I always believed in the final in Athens, not just since yesterday. This has always been our objective and you can only have the possibility of arriving if you really believe. Without a doubt some important sides were eliminated and this eases things even further. Yesterday’s game was very difficult. A 0-0 results is always an ambiguous score, even if you score there is always the fear that they could score at the last minute. However, Milan historically have always proven that they can turn this result in their favour.’

‘I was really tired after yesterday’s game, it was intense. All things considered, today I trained really hard despite some pain. Sunday’s game against Inter is too important and I naturally hope to be there. Inter and Milan are coming from two very different situations. Our qualification has certainly charged our morale. Our objective is to remain in fourth place with a derby victory. It will be a strange game, it’s been quite sometime since we have played this fixture during the day.’

Maldini hits 600 and marches on

Paolo Maldini will mark his 600th Serie A appearance in the Milan derby tomorrow, but is reconsidering his retirement plans.

“Now that my knees seem to be working again, I’d like to carry on for another season,” he told ‘La Stampa’ newspaper. “It would have to be centre stage, though.”

The Rossoneri hero had hinted this would be his final campaign after recent years were blighted by a series of knee injuries.

Last term he managed just 14 Serie A appearances – albeit with two goals – and this season he has put together 21 games between the League and Europe.

Already the player with the most Serie A caps of all time, Maldini is set to round out that figure on Sunday afternoon with his 600th top flight match – all with the Milan jersey.

“We have a very clear promise with Paolo. If he wants to continue his playing career, then all he has to do is come to the club headquarters and sign the contract,” assured Vice-President Adriano Galliani.

Of the players still in activity, the only one even close to matching this target is Ascoli goalkeeper Gianluca Pagliuca on 592.

Maldini played his first Derby della Madonnina in a 2-2 draw on December 1, 1985 and on Sunday will face Inter for the 52nd time.
