Milan's Maldini hurt, could miss CL

MILAN, Italy (AP) -- AC Milan captain Paolo Maldini has a left knee injury and could miss both legs of the Champions League quarterfinals against Bayern Munich.

Following an initial medical exam Monday, surgery was ruled out. More medical tests are planned for later in the week.

The 38-year-old Maldini wants to avoid surgery because he fears it could end his career.

Maldini was hurt in Sunday's derby loss to Inter Milan.

The games against Bayern are scheduled for April 3 and 11.

Maldini fitness worry for AC Milan

MILAN, Italy -- AC Milan are anxiously waiting on a further examination of their captain Paolo Maldini who faces a lengthy layoff after injuring his left knee.

The 38-year-old veteran defender suffered the injury in last Sunday's 2-1 Serie A defeat to city rivals and league leaders Inter.

The match at the San Siro was Maldini's 600th Serie A appearance.

Media reports suggest Maldini could be looking at a six-week lay-off, which would rule him out of both legs of AC Milan's Champions League quarterfinal against Bayern Munich.

But the club are refusing to say how long he will be out for until a proper assessment of the injury has been carried out.

"Maldini is better and he is in less pain," AC Milan said in a statement.

"We are monitoring his condition, and over the next couple of days we will have a better idea of when he will be back on the pitch."

Maldini 'fit for Bayern clash'

Specialists have told Paolo Maldini he could be ready for the first leg of the quarter-final with Bayern Munich.

The Milan captain suffered a new left knee setback during the Milan derby and there were fears he could require surgery for the persistent problem.

However, the club website announced he had visited specialist Professor Marc Martens in Belgium and that an operation would not be necessary.

The medic recommended continuing with physiotherapy to solve the issue and, although “the situation will be monitored daily,” it’s believed Maldini can be back within six weeks.

The defender can therefore be ready for the first leg of the Champions League quarter-final against Bayern Munich on April 3.

Alessandro Nesta is expected to return this weekend after several months out with a shoulder injury, while Serginho is also close to a comeback following a groin strain.

ROSSONERI PREPARATION

Paolo Maldini, Serginho, Alessandro Nesta and Pippo Inzaghi were hard at work along with the rest of the squad in today’s training session

The Rossoneri returned to training today after the two days off granted by Carlo Ancelotti. The group met at 15.30 CET. Daniele Bonera is back from national duty and he participated in the session as well. The first part of the training was dedicated to strengthening exercises in the gym, followed by warm-ups in the raised obstacle course outside.

The players then moved to the upper field for running and stretching before Carlo Ancelotti dived them up into two six-man groups. The first training match was on a reduced pitch and ball possession work concluded this phase.

The group then started a six-against-six exercise, once again on the reduced pitch but with two touch passing and two goals. Nelson Dida and Valerio Fiori were the keepers for this match, while Marco Storari continued to train with coach Villiam Vecchi.

Paolo Maldini, Serginho, Alessandro Nesta and Pippo Inzaghi worked along with the rest of the group. Kakha Kaladze started working on strength training in the sandpit and then focused on technical exercises.

Maldini set to surrender?

Milan captain Paolo Maldini has admitted that he may consider ending his career this summer if his knee problems persist.

The veteran, in his 23rd season with the San Siro outfit, has been suffering with fitness issues for some time and suffered a fresh setback against Inter on March 11 when he picked up another meniscus injury.

“The knee that I operated last year is doing well, but the other is now more or less in the same situation as the one that underwent surgery,” said Maldini on Tuesday.

“If things continue like this then it will be almost impossible to continue.

“Furthermore, this season has been far more intense as far as the number of games and the minutes played compared to last term.

“I have started this week well, working with the team despite the problems I had after the derby. We will see what happens.”

Although the 38-year-old wants to be as much use as possible to his beloved Rossoneri, he has accepted that he’s unable to stop the sands of time.

“I have also seen doctor Martens this week and he told me that I can forget about playing two games in a row,” he added.

“As for whether or not I will have to undergo more knee surgery, that depends on the swelling.”

Milan are confronted with a frantic end to the season and immediately face a couple of massive tasks when they will visit Roma and then host Bayern Munich in the first leg of the Champions League quarter-final.

“I hope to be available for Roma or I would like to at least be on the bench,” continued the former Italy captain.

“Bayern are the same tough opponent as always, physically very strong, but I am optimistic about the Champions League.

“At this stage of the season Milan must show what they can do and we can’t be satisfied just yet. We must do even more than what we have done so far.

"As to finishing in fourth, it is closer than it was at the beginning of the season. It remains our minimum objective…”
