Cult Icon Posted March 30, 2020 Posted March 30, 2020 ^^ the disease spreads shockingly fast and spreads when most people aren't taking it seriously. Just 4 weeks ago I saw that the malls and stores in my town were at approx. 70-80% capacity over that weekend. Interestingly enough at a local super-sized B & N, the whole parking lot was full! The libraries had a lot of people too. The next week everything shut down. I think this is when the last group of people got infected. The two towns that I live in the border of have a total of 100+ confirmed infected when Bergen County was reporting 1,800 infected and 31 dead. Today there are 3,000 + infected for the county. My original estimate of 200 confirmed infected in the two towns are probably on the mark. Quote

The people that left the area 2-3 weeks ago are going to put other states and regions at severe risk. Quote

The NJ counties that are getting the most infections are the ones that surround New York City- and commute there for work. West/South Jersey aren't anywhere as bad. Quote

As of yesterday, people are still crowded on some beaches in Florida, taking advantage of the inconsistency in rules/guidelines. People keep acting like it's a thing that's happening far away, even when it's close. 22 minutes ago, Stromboli1 said: Virginia issued a stay at home order till mid June, I think this is a precursor for what's going to happen to the rest of the country as I think it's worse as they're letting on. I hope they are not hiding how bad it is, that would be the worst case scenario. The best case may be that they were slow to react and did a bad job. (This is true of any country/city) Quote

It's hard to react when there's very limited information as more people get tested the better to plan. It doesn't help when people don't listen either especially with dense populated areas. Quote
jkjk Posted March 30, 2020 Posted March 30, 2020 There have been a number of dumb ideas of how to deal with the virus, like what the President of Belarus said. Here are two dumb ideas from this week: A) Intentionally get athletes sick because they are young and strong, then sports can start. Problems with this: 1) They can spread it 2) it's not impossible for young healthy people to die from this 3) there have been cases where people have lung damage after getting sick. B) Older people saying that grandparents would be willing to take a chance at getting sick if it meant keeping the economy going for their grandchildren. Problems with this: 1) You don't get to choose who gets sick, so you are not risking yourself but everyone, including your grandchildren who could also die. 2) If you remove social distancing to help the economy, more people die, and panic causes the economy to get worse anyway. I noticed that the NJ testing figures were initially 30 % with COVID19 and now it's more like 40%. 4 weeks ago it was perceived as a NYC city/Westchester county thing by the news media so people reacted accordingly. NJ numbers were reported not high enough for worry. Now it's 21,000. 1 week ago I saw that the two towns I live around had 25 confirmed. Now it's 100 confirmed with more pending. Basically a critical lag in data/information with the reality on the ground. Quote

I guess it comes down to the fact that government officials are people, too. They along with the average person had trouble accepting that this was coming. I think government officials, and individuals, around the world didn't listen to the smart people saying this was inevitable. And I understand the mentality that something is happening somewhere else so I don't need to worry about it. I read an article explaining that South Korea took it seriously early, in part because they did not act quickly with SARS many years ago, and paid for it. Not many countries had that experience to look back on. For whatever reason, I took this seriously earlier than many, but I could have easily been on the other side. Quote

Limited info with the WHO lying lead to countries downplaying this until it was too late. Still should've taken precautions though. China is still spitting out disinformation. Quote

Look up the interview with the WHO Official when he's asked about Taiwan. Quote
