Random thought of the day: I have a hard time deciding if I want to watch a new show, specifically streaming. The wait for new episodes is so long that I don't want to start by watching eight episodes and then waiting for over a year (or more) for eight more.

 

I find myself more likely to start something that's finished which guarantees no waits for episodes.

That's what I do.  I follow the same philosophy for other media in order to avoid frustration.

 

However, I definitely enjoy watching something in parts if it has a massive hype machine, such as the Nolan Batman films, Game of Thrones, Vikings, etc.

The best bit was when he called out Tim Cook and Apple for their working conditions in China and they cut to Tim Cook himself. The fake laugh that guy forced upon his lips was unfortunately not as convincing as the ones some of the actors managed.

Australia arrests 183 for setting bushfires that celebrities claim were caused by climate change

Australia’s rampant and destructive wildfires were started by arson, and fueled by dry conditions and high temperatures, but you’d never know it from the Golden Globes or mainstream media outlets.

In November, a teenage volunteer firefighter from New South Wales was charged with setting 7 bushfires in the region, and then returning with his brigade to fight them. Apparently, he has set 17 fires, and the pyromaniac has now been barred from access to any firefighting equipment.

“When one country faces a climate disaster, we all face a climate disaster,” Cate Blanchett said.

Meanwhile, Russell Crowe’s statement at the Golden Globes, read aloud by Jennifer Anniston, stated that “the tragedy unfolding in Australia is climate change based. We need to act based on science, move our global workforce to renewable energy, and respect our planet for the unique and amazing place it is. That way, we all have a future.”

Switching the script, Joaquin Phoenix took personal responsibility for his own actions, and advocated for a plant-based diet. “It’s great to vote, but sometimes we have to take that responsibility on ourselves and make changes and sacrifices in our own lives and hope that we can do that. We don’t have to take private jets to Palm Springs for the awards. I’ll try to do better, and I hope you will too.”

According to The Australian, “Police arrested 183 people for lighting bushfires across Queensland, NSW, Victoria, South Australia and Tasmania in the past few months. NSW police data shows 183 people have been charged or cautioned for bushfire-related offences since November 8, and 24 arrested for deliberately starting bushfires.”

That’s 183 people who have been arrested for arson, resulting in catastrophic bushfires, displacement, property loss, and deaths of both people and animals.

So why do so many Hollywood celebrities claim that the massive fires in Australia are a result of climate change? There’s a years’ long drought along Australia’s Gold Coast. There are rising temperatures. This has been the driest year on record, and the fire and cyclone seasons are just around the corner. But without those 183 arsonists arrested since August, these blazes would probably be substantially less bad.

Climate change, greenhouse gases, pollution, air quality, and other threats to life and quality of life are of course real concerns. But the predilection of media and stars to taking any tragedy and using it as a fulcrum for their own cause celeb does less to amplify the need for action and policy change, and more to highlight the myopia that makes the public at large roll their eyes. Extinction Rebellion, devotees of teen climate activist Greta Thunberg, and simplifications of complex issues make it easy for people to dismiss climate concerns as baseless. Stating facts and offering solutions will do more to convince people of the need for change than easily dismissable hyperbole.

Dozens of firebugs blamed for destructive Queensland fires

Almost 100 firebugs have deliberately started blazes across Queensland that have destroyed homes and consumed thousands of hectares of bushland.

Some 65 fires continued to burn across the state on Friday, jumping from 55 reported on Thursday, as the fire threat deepened heading into the weekend.

As firefighters remained on high alert, police revealed 103 of the destructive fires that had lashed Queensland since September were deliberately lit.

Figures obtained by AAP revealed police had dealt with 98 people - 31 adults and 67 juveniles - for deliberately setting fires.

If they did their homework, ratings have gone down steadily over the years as the normal people don't give a fuck anymore about elitists giving out awards to other elitists.

Droughts in the affected regions were caused by a natural weather phenomenon the Indian Ocean dipole, not by man-made climate change.

When there is a large gap like that example, critics almost certainly have inflated their number. That's only half of the story though. The deflation of the audience number through review bombing and other methods is the other side of how those kinds of differences in numbers show up. These types of campaigns against certain shows and movies is well documented, and it happens for many reasons (I'm too lazy to list those).

 

Anecdotally, I have noticed this on multiple women-led movies and shows when there is no way people have even seen the movie/show yet. I am not saying these projects ended up being good or that I even saw them, just that I don't think the reviewers saw them either.

 

All of this is why I try to avoid any reviews before seeing something (movies or shows), but occasionally I make a mistake and look.

You're right. The best way to know if you like a movie is to actually watch it.

Actually, there aren't many academic papers on this. I've read Morten Bay's paper on TLJ: it's not very rigorous work. Not only is he obsessed by "the scaaaary Russians", but the academic value of his paper is questionable. He was a PhD student when he wrote it, and if I had been his advisor, I would've asked him to be more rigorous, there are lots of tautologies in his work.

 

Anyway, I'm sure there are a couple of trolls out here, but there's also an inflation of the audience scores by Hollywood studios. They use fake accounts to improve the audience score of their movies, that's pretty clear.

That's an assumption that the press used in order to defend Captain Marvel, but they are wrong. People loved Alien, Tomb Raider or Red Sonja (all female-led).

 

The problem with these recent movies is that they use "Mary Sues" for identity politcs purposes (which is sexist against women, because they are barred from having flaws) and the scenarios are weak/manichean. Also, Brie Larson had a couple of obnoxious behaviors during interviews
