So Kate was at the Melbourne Cup

MELBOURNE Cup day is in full swing under a blue sky, as tens of thousands of racegoers pack Flemington for the race that stops a nation.

Punters, fashionistas and equine fans are enjoying a fine sunny day at the races with a top temperature of 24C and one of the best fields in the event's history on the cards.

Emirates guest model Kate Upton headed straight up to the balcony at Emirates and made a new friend with Buddy Franklin.

The pair chatted, smiled and laughed for the cameras with lots of eyes on them.

What's up with all these hats recently?

Because it's tradition.

Why do the English wear them to weddings, and society events? Why do woman wear them to the Kentucky Derby?

The tradition of wearing hats dates back to the time when the Anglican Church required ladies to keep their heads covered in Church, much like other religions still do to today.

Also they're worn because it's partly for fun, but there's also an unspoken competition for best hat. As you go up the social ladder and into royalty, hats become more outrageous, functioning not only as displays of style but also wealth and stature.

Horse Racing used to be known as the Sport of Kings, which lends partially to why you wear them to racing events today.  (And Australia is a part of the British Commonwealth after all)

Are we sure she's not pregos?

Dear god the width of her face and abdomen lately.. Now she's always been broad through her lower area, but whatever is going on recently is just ... wow

If she isn't, I agree she is starting to look like it.
