In 1995, she was then cast in her first television role, a part in the made-for-television movie, Zoya. Her next acting jobs were in two short-lived television series, Significant Others and Time of Your Life, and a recurring role in the series Felicity. Garner appeared in the comedy Dude, Where's My Car?. In 2001, she appeared in the big-budget epic Pearl Harbor.

Later in 2001, J. J. Abrams approached Garner about starring in a new show he was working on for ABC. Garner auditioned for and was cast in the role of Sydney Bristow in the spy drama Alias. The series became a success and Garner won the award for "Best Actress in a Television Series - Drama" at the January 2002 Golden Globes. Alias had just begun a few months beforehand, and Garner won the award with only half the season's episodes aired. The series was successful, concluding in May 2006 after a fifth, abbreviated season. Garner's salary for the show began at $45,000 an episode, rising to $150,000 per episode by the series' end. During the show's run, Garner received four consecutive Golden Globe nominations for her lead performance. She also received four consecutive Emmy nominations for "Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series." Garner won the "Actor Award" from the Screen Actors Guild in 2005.

After the initial success of Alias, Garner returned to her film career with a small role in Catch Me if You Can, and starred alongside Ben Affleck as Elektra Natchios in the action movie Daredevil, an adaptation of the comic book. She showed her comedic side in 2004's 13 Going on 30, whose commercial success established her as a leading feature film actress, and reprised her role as "Elektra" in the 2005 spin-off to Daredevil, entitled Elektra.

Garner appeared in comedy/drama feature Juno. After that film's premiere at the Toronto Film Festival, Entertainment Weekly declared Garner's role the best female supporting performance of the festival.

Garner appeared in Cyrano de Bergerac at the Richard Rodgers Theatre- on Broadway from November 1, 2007. This was her Broadway debut. For this role Garner won the 9th Annual broadway.com Audiance Award for Favorite Actress in a Play.

In 1993, she made a brief appearance in film Dazed and Confused, then had a minor role in ABC TV mini series named Murder in the Heartland. The following year, she appeared in Reality Bites, and the biopic film 8 Seconds. Zellweger's first main part in a movie came with the 1994 horror movie Return of the Texas Chainsaw Massacre. Her next movie was Love and a .45,. The performance earned her an Independent Spirit Award for Best Debut Performance. She subsequently moved to Los Angeles to pursue a career in acting, winning roles in the films Empire Records, The Whole Wide World. Zellweger first became widely known to audiences around the world with her role in 1996's Jerry Maguire. Since then, Zellweger has won acclaim in roles such as One True Thing and in Nurse Betty. The role garnered the actress her first of three Golden Globe Awards.

In 2001, Zellweger gained the prized lead role as Bridget Jones in the British romantic comedy film Bridget Jones's Diary, a film that is based on the 1996 novel Bridget Jones's Diary by Helen Fielding. Her performance as Bridget received praise from critics. As a result of her considerable efforts to effect author Helen Fielding's character, Zellweger caught the attention of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, and received her first Best Actress Academy Award nomination.

In 2002, she starred in White Oleander. The same year, she appeared in the critically-acclaimed musical film Chicago. The movie received an Academy Award for Best Picture, and Zellweger received positive reviews from the critics. As a result, she earned her second Academy Award nomination as Best Actress, as well as the Screen Actors Guild and Golden Globe Award. In 2004, Zellweger finally received an Academy Award, this time as Best Supporting Actress in Cold Mountain. Zellweger has since starred in the sequel to Bridget Jones's Diary in Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason, lent her voice to the DreamWorks animated features Shark Tale and Bee Movie, and starred in the 2005 film Cinderella Man.

2005 she also appeared in Miss Potter. In 2008, she starred in the period comedy Leatherheads.

StudioCanal and Alain Goldman's Legende are currently developing the next film entitled My Very Own Love Song. StudioCanal has confirmed that Renee Zellweger is attached to the project.

It has been confirmed that she will star in the feature film 'My One and Only', due for release in 2009.
