They're only as good as the ingredients they use, some use shit ingredients and you can taste the difference. Also usually the better places can recommend other high quality bakeries and eateries cause they know the difference. It's basically like a club.
May 12, 20205 yr American bakeries are overpriced, and either mediocre or above average. Too much reliance on icing, which makes their cakes extremely sweet. Italian and Russian bakeries are the best and have the best goods & fair prices. Korean/Japanese/French bakeries are usually pretty good over here but way, way too overpriced for what they are. It looks like the Koreans/Japanese copied the French methods and added some modifications of their own. Chinese bakeries are good value for the price but mediocre or below average. Their breads are cheap, their cakes are overpriced for the mediocre quality.

My take on this is that you're going to pay the price for quality no matter if it's French, Japanese, Italian, etc cause there's a difference in quality of each ethnic bakery subset. I guess you can say it's all about preference as well too. Location of the bakeries can play a factor too as the product could be cheaper or more expensive due to where they get their ingredients from, cost of living, etc.

However in general (NY Metro area) the Korean/Japanese/French bakeries try to be up-market, American/Italian in the middle and Chinese (and American grocery stores) at value. That's why they are the most widespread. Russian cakes I can only find at that Farmer's market or when I'm in the right towns. So in poorer places there are only American grocery store bakeries, richer places will have Korean/Japanese/French bakeries to take advantage of traffic.
