Quentin Tarantino Has Made His Best Movie in a Decade

An epic and melancholy hangout film, Once Upon a Time in Hollywood stars Leonardo DiCaprio as a film star grappling with his looming irrelevance

DiCaprio, who hasn’t appeared on-screen since he won an Oscar for The Revenant in 2015, is phenomenal, tapping into a vein of humor and self-awareness that has been lacking in some of his later work. There’s irony in seeing Hollywood’s biggest (and perhaps final) movie star playing someone who’s all washed up, but DiCaprio has been working in showbiz since he was a child—he’s someone who can understand the ways in which the industry builds people up and then tears them down. One of the film’s most enrapturing sequences sees Dalton on the set of a new TV show, led by an up-and-coming star (Timothy Olyphant). Dalton chats with a child actor who has just entered the industry, and her resolute professionalism—aided by his drunkenness—brings him to tears. The sequence is both humane and laugh-out-loud funny, perhaps a knowing nod from Tarantino at his own looming irrelevance (he swears he will direct only 10 movies before retiring, and Once Upon a Time in Hollywood is his ninth).

  • In a year filled with dull movies, Quentin Tarantino's "Once Upon a Time in Hollywood" will finally give moviegoers a jolt of originality.
  •
  • Tarantino's ninth movie is unlike his previous work, as it sticks to one narrative, particularly the story of two characters, the TV star Rick Dalton (Leonardo DiCaprio) and his stuntman, Cliff Booth (Brad Pitt).
  •
  • Both actors give great performances, but it's DiCaprio who shines, proving he's one of the best actors of his generation.

Tks for more new movie stills from Total Film article.

Unfortunately I haven't had much luck finding these foreign magazines in my local stores,  but , maybe, I'll luck out and find this one.  As I do love that great closeup of Rick at the wheel

Once Upon A Time In Hollywood is hilarious, hypnotic, nostalgic and surprisingly one of the most heartwarming movies Tarantino’s ever made. The ending is incredible but will be very divisive. As a whole it’s not going to be for everyone, but I think it’s one of Tarantino’s best.

Every Tarantino movie has it own subtle (and not so subtle) flavors. ONCE UPON A TIME IN HOLLYWOOD is all the Tarantino flavors at once. It’s the movie he’s been working towards for three decades. I loved it.

There's a million things to say about ONCE UPON A TIME IN HOLLYWOOD, but they'll have to wait for a while. I can say, however, that I was unexpectedly moved by the portrayal of Cliff and Rick's relationship, and the many things this film has to say about best friendships.

In particular (and this is just my read, no spoilers), I like that the film addresses the idea that there are no heroes or sidekicks in a true best friendship. No matter what strengths or weaknesses you bring to the table, you're equals. Best friends are each other's heroes.

Taking the whole Billions writers’ room to see Once Upon A Time In Hollywood at the first screening tomorrow. If you’re there, I apologize in advance for laughing and clapping so loudly.
