Yes, I think that's the case, but I shall add that their "market research" is very poor. I've worked with market analysts. Their job is an art, not a science (and definitely not an exact science). Also, good analysts are very rare. For one very good market analyst, there are hundreds of incompetent ones.
Marketing departments in companies like Disney are filled with people with fake knowledge (like gender studies, etc. ). These people don't do research, they spew what they have been fed during their "courses".
With some real research, they'd see that audience don't like their entertainment to be politicized.
