Luck certainly plays a part. Remember how Milan were kicked out of the competition as part of their punishment for their corrupt dealings in that rather large Italian football scandal? Funny how that was overturned. Good job Berlusconi has friends in high places.

I'd question Milan's status as the best team in their own city, so the idea of them ruling all of Europe feels a bit strange. Not that it works that way.

Well we played and we lost: 6-4, 6-2. I managed to serve okay but like you, my net play is very weak. My partner is a much more aggressive player than me and has a pretty decent serve but unfortunately it was all over the place today. The other guys were pretty good but I think it was more a case of us getting beaten because we really aren't doubles players. I'm ultra competitive but this was very much a sociable jaunt, I can't really see doubles as anything more. Great to see Moya still competing.

In other tennis news, I'm playing a doubles match tomorrow afternoon. I've never even met our opponents but apparently one of them is really, really good. I'd like to think we'll win and I'll play like a champion but my incredibly inferior serve will almost certainly be exposed.

In the interview she denies the story, saying she's still with Pacey and not with Jack Huston. So it seems as though she was directly addressing the rumours we heard about a while back. Here's a clip from the Cannes opening ceremony The hair kinda made me laugh. Reminded me of Princess Leia.
  10. Nemeside's contributions are always appreciated in the Diane topic!

She was great at the opening ceremony. It was funny, all the Hollywood actors (and Norah Jones) looked like they were falling asleep. Learn some French, guys! ES scans (diane-kruger.net) Says in the text that Diane and Pacey are still a couple, which means she isn't dating that unemployed beardy, which is probably a good thing.

    Awesome~!
  16. Maxim is read largely by low brow chumps. I guess this is the only publicity Lohan can generate which won't mention the words "cocaine" or "box office flop". Good for her, I guess.

With regard to Newcastle, how bad was Glenn Roeder? (Rhetorical question ) His interviews with all their third person defiance were hilariously lame - "If you think Glenn Roeder's going to walk away from a tough situation then you don't know Glenn Roeder", all compounded by the fact that he ended up resigning. Just a terrible manager, I don't know anyone who has a good word to say about him.

Diego's great and he definitely helps make Werder Bremen such an entertaining team to watch. I think all the big clubs will be lining up for him but I'd like to see him stay in the Bundesliga for at least one more season. He's got time yet. I can't see Newcastle doing much next season beyond hoping for the top ten. They need to be realistic and stop kidding themselves. Rome wasn't built in a day and God knows they need to re-build their squad. I'm sure they'll try and go for instant success like they always do, by signing some high profile player who'll declare the club's fans as "the best in the world", and how "you just have to look around the stadium to see how much it means to the people", before either breaking his leg on debut or falling out with Allardyce in training. I hardly noticed Everton all season but they quietly did pretty well. Vaughan's an absolute beast and Arteta is top quality. Moyes is a good manager and I'm sure he'll invest whatever money he's given wisely (Beattie must have been a cautionary tale). If Arsenal can get their best players fit then they should be right up there competing for honours. They really need to dig a little deeper, especially against weaker opposition away from home. I think injuries have exposed their squad as a little light at times but as you mentioned, they'll be more experienced and prepared by the new season plus Wenger's probably scouting some wonderboy from Djibouti as we speak.

Schalke like to play themselves up as a bunch of Johnny Do Gooders, a club built on noble traditions but I guess that includes how they threw matches back in the early '70s and ended up having a bunch of players banned from the game for life? They won the UEFA Cup in '97 and got very smug about it. Then like a week later we won a little competition called the European Cup. Aston Villa finished 11th, unbeaten in the last nine games and playing some nice football. We've got money to spend in the summer, a great manager and some decent home grown players...so we'll probably finish 9th next season, just behind Bolton.

I still can't like Schalke. Its like one the laws of the universe, or something.
