I don't think the beachwaver is so much the problem as them brushing out the curls. They weren't even using it backstage last year from what I remember and the hair was still lacking curl/wave and volume.

Rewatching last year's show and please hair stylists backstage do not brush out the curls so much. It looks so awful. Plus the minimal makeup isn't helping.
