I wouldn't mind so much if he were the only senior player in a young squad, but the majority of England's starting eleven have been around since the year dot, so I can't imagine inexperience being a problem. Hopefully, the clamour for Beckham to be involved is just a clever way for fans to keep their minds off more frightening thoughts, like - "we might have to play Upson or Carragher at the back", or "has Fabio remembered to pack Rooney's ritalin?"

^I'm massively disappointed! Zanetti's my Banfield boy too - he said he'd never play for another Argentino team when River and Boca inevitably came calling (couldn't resent him for going to Italy though).Both he and Cambiasso (whom I rate anyway) have had stellar seasons with Inter, and their exclusion smacks of some sort of nefarious deed... To be honest it could have been a lot worse though: I consider that Maradona didn't opt to take every Boca journeyman with him as some slim consolation; but there are still some incredibly weird selections/omissions. <_< (Probably go and win it now, and I shall have to partake of humble pie!) I actually think Inter's Argentine contingent might have suffered by having Mourinho as their manager. While he's around, the players never get the proper credit. Any club in the world would kill to have the services of Eto'o, Lucio, Samuel, Zanetti, Cambiasso, Milito and Maicon (to name just a few), but the popular opinion seems to be that Jose took a useless bunch and turned them into European champions. Maybe Diego bought into that too. <_<

Bands like AC/DC and Motorhead have looked and sounded exactly the same for 30 years, too. They're one-trick ponies to a certain extent, but it's a unique trick that nobody else can do (or at least not as well). For as long as they're around, they'll have a piece of the market cornered. The average pop singer doesn't really have that luxury, and there's so much similar stuff around. Unless they constantly try to reinvent themselves, people get bored and move on.
