I would have watched Dune but Timothee's face is offensive to me.   I couldn't stand him (or Bob Patty) in this either.  Hans Zimmer is a great movie composer, very often his music is better than the movie.

What is Tartuffes?

 

Fishburne was acting since the 1970s.  He had a supporting role in the great film (probably my no. 1 film) Apocalypse now.  Most people don't know it because he was so young.  He also played Othello in the movie.  A few years ago he was in the Hannibal show, and gained some weight.  His daughter is nuts and did porn IIRC.

 

There is something of a fanatic in his acting for the Matrix movies, that not every actor can replicate.  I always appreciate the moment of truth when he confronts the Agent, meaning that his words and his behaviors had true conviction (to the death!) in them:

It seems to me that high quality book-loyal adaptations like GOT Season 1-4 and  LOTR/Hobbit (reputably so) are an abberation particularly in todays' entertainment environment.   It makes me wonder what is going on in the brain of modern feminist/hard core progressive when they watch entertainment.   Eg. They would see a masculine story and say to themselves, this is too patriarchal, I want the story radically twisted into a more feminized version and I want more of the characters to be black and white females.  In the case of the Witcher it is- this story is too 1990s era feminist, I want it 21st century WOKE and I want the Witcher to be equal or less than the Witches in the story.

 

Then entertainment companies would have to enforce regulations on all their productions to satisfy this mentality.

 

If there is another Witcher series by another company in 10 years (after WOKE Witcher is done) it would be cool if it was actually faithful to the characters, themes, and books/games.  Not holding my breath for this one..

There's also The Last Duel.   I have a copy now.  It has failed commercially but according to users/reviewers it is good to OK for what it is.   

 

It seems like it was made due to the current environment and sold as a "Medieval Metoo" movie.  I can't imagine Ridley Scott making this in the  early 2000s instead of Kingdom of Heaven or Robin Hood.

I never understood the politicization of entertainment (and honestly, this is why I've come to hate political correctness - I didn't care about it first, but I really took notice when it started to infiltrate the cultural products I like).

 

It seems to me that this politicization doesn't make sense:

 

1) On a marketing viewpoint: you basically risk to cut a huge chunk of your audience (I wouldn't say it's divided by 2, but you get the idea)

 

2) On a creative viewpoint: by implementing "McCarthyist" practices (and yes, Woke entertainment is neo-McCarthyism), you just restrict the creative freedom (hence the diversity of artworks - diversity in the original meaning of the word!)

 

3) On a philosophical viewpoint: if they're so convinced of the logical/moral/virtuous value of their ideologies, why force-feed them? Just let people's reason/heart be convinced.

 

What I do understand is the sheep-like behavior of big companies: when they become too big, companies (like Disney) become risk-adverse as fuck (meaning that they shit their pants all the time and won't take risks - and when you follow the mob, you don't take risks).

I agree with this, it is weird to distort content in this way however I see it constantly on TV news/commercials now for the past couple years meaning that is is massive trend throughout US media.  With manipulating content into WOKE, it is as if offending a portion of the audience is OK as long as we get the eyeballs the rest who aren't effected by the changes.  Some reviews of S2 of the Witcher are like that, they recognize that the series is "hell" for fans but "paradise" for casuals.  Amazon's Wheel of Time has similar issues of being WOKE, having bad actors, and being wildly inaccurate to the books.

 

It seems that book readers/hardcore fans rarely find movies/TV series acceptable and are usually the ones that get ignored.  However few people read books compared to the general audience/casuals, who just want some quick & disposible entertainment so I think in the end the fan positions don't matter much in a commercial sense.  However the WOKE manipulation probably alienates much more than some book readers/superfans.

 

There is however another aspect, in that if the entire industry force-feeds WOKE into productions, eventually the consumer's mind will become WOKE too/or non-confrontational because they don't have a choice. 

 

I am certainly not one of these people as I consume few movies/TV shows as a rule, and exercise narrowly defined choice & have a lot of options to do other things for entertainment, like reading and BZ lol.  

 

However there is another type of movie/TV consumer that casually watches this or that to fill up the time, I think entertainment companies target them instead.

If HBO gave a GOT style treatment for Witcher I think it would look like this:

 

Books 1, 2, 8:  1-3 Seasons (10-12 episodes per season)

 

Books 3-7: 5-6 Seasons

 

It would be minimum 6 Seasons, max 9.  

 

However certain aspects of the book loyal show wouldn't entirely work from a commercial and contract perspective.  I heard that the weird timelines, confusion about what a Witcher is/what the world of the Witcher is,  and most of the invented content for Netflix Season 1 was due to Netflix enforcing the absolute requirement of having Ciri and Yennefer in every episode.  

 

There would need to be VERY strong actors for Geralt and Dandelion for the first 1-3 Seasons, as they cannot introduce Yennefer and Ciri until the end of the short story cycle.  Viewers should be very curious about the main quest after enjoying the short stories.  Realisticallly I doubt that a studio would allow the short story cycle to be more than 1 season unless the charisma of the traveling duo was so good that viewers wanted more and more.

 

All in all if HBO made the Witcher I don't think there would be any fan backlash like GOT after it finished.  The story is genius and complete.

I think most people don't know what Rashomon is.  I've never seen it either.  

 

I have a copy of the film and skimmed a bit, it seems well made but it also makes one wonder where is the market for something lilke this.  I have been itching for another, good medieval battle film for ages but this one is mainly a rape drama.

Unfortunately this is true and it applies to many great, classic films.

The Romance novel is much maligned as the female version of pornography.  There is truth to this, however I think that, like porn, it is quite informative of how women think and what they want, rather than what is intelligent, wise and true.

 

I'm been sampling some fantasy & romance audiobooks and having been listening to Bridget Jone's diary, a pretty influential series.  I think it accurately captures the anxiety of 1990s era feminists as they age into their biological clock.  The audiobook is painful to listen to as the narrator is extremely neurotic :

1. The protagonist starts off in her 30s and well into her biological clock.  To be that "independent woman" it required spending most of one's time between age 18-32 at school and selling away one's youth/time to the employer.  Was it worth overemphasizing this aspect and throwing one's opportunities away throughout one's 20s while man after man threw themselves at them?  Isn't the most valuable resource...time?  Time that the woman can't get back?

 

2. What makes this woman qualified to make intelligent judgements for a lifelong life partner?  Her biological instincts?  As Book 3 shows, she didn't and she failed.  (This part is very true to life)  Wouldn't it be better if she spent her energies remedying her lack of insight and then, making intelligent decisions?  Wouldn't society benefit massively as a whole if people did this, and wasted less of their youth on the wrong relationships?

 

3. "Bridget Jones" suffers greatly from a thousand trivial matters, generally concerned about what OTHER people think of her.  Wouldn't it be better to just let them go?
