I saw CR in theaters. I don't remember anything besides the fact that it was a gritty take. And: 1. Eva Green was beautiful, and cried in the showers 2. collapsing building. 3. Nordic villain 4. Bond looked like a street thug 5. Bond gets groin torture :-D

Sounds like Javier (as Raoul Silva) got an ever-so-slightly better deal than Mathieu Amalric in the character naming stakes. The Bond flicks have produced some of the most iconic names in movie history and the best they could come up with for poor Mathieu in 'Quantum' was Dominic Green. :pinch:

The only Bond film that I remember is Goldeneye. Somehow, that was more memorable than the others I've seen. And it was definitely due to Xenia and the whole Russian Angle... I'm not a Bond fan (yet...) because I find this line of movies to be rather boring and unrealistic....

The Skyfall trailer is very vague, but perhaps it is masking a pleasant surprise...!

^I did like Goldeneye a lot, though I must say, the three follow-ups with Pierce Brosnan did absolutely nothing for me. Broadly speaking, I find the Bond movies to be a pretty mixed bag and from what I’ve seen, even the most beloved Connery-era stuff is very much of its time. So if you do feel like checking out the older efforts, my advice would to be judge with a sizeable grain of salt. :hehe:

Yeah, I agree about the rest of the Brosnan movies. I simply don't remember much, and I was bored throughout.

'Skyfall' is getting strong reviews so far, and was at 96% RT last I checked. I skimmed a little, and it seems to be a different take on Bond (a more human, and more vulnerable one), and more like the Bond in the novels. Also, the antagonist is said to be genuinely 'frightening', not just another 'bond baddie'

LOL edit: Post 3 of mine is referring to "Casino Royale", not QOS.

So I went today, and I'm happy to report that it exceeded my absolute best case scenario by miles – it wasn’t just a brilliant James Bond film, it was a brilliant film full stop. I'd go so far as to call Silva the most menacing action movie villain this side of Heath Ledger’s Joker.

^Possibly, yeah. Up to now, I've gotten the impression that they've been doing their absolute best to keep the majority of the plot under wraps.

It's actually quite a while before Silva first appears in the movie, although he plays a major part in proceedings from that point onwards, with a backstory that's intrinsically linked to MI6 and a very personal sense of vengeance. The character is a camp, creepy and almost reptilian guy with a Norman Bates complex, who modulates between flamboyant, businesslike and viciously brutal. Yet, every so often you'll still catch yourself thinking 'actually, he's got a point' - which I think is a real testament to Javier's performance. :hehe:

Awesome, I'm looking forward to it. In the US, it opens Nov. 9. I haven't seen a really good movie (in the theaters) in years.

One of the things that struck me about the trailer was how little of Silvia they showed. So I was assuming that they didn't show him, because they didn't...well, have anything to show. But now that you and the press have told me that it was intentional, then that's certainly promising :PinkCouture2:

Do you want to see the movie again, and is it the type of movie that has layered complexities?

^I’m rarely one for seeing movies more than once on the big screen, but I wouldn’t mind catching this one again before it goes. Without wishing to spoil anything by going into great detail, I'd say the central plot is fairly straightforward, but a simple story needn't be an unsophisticated one and there are a good few different strands at work, all of which are pulled together nicely by Mendes. It was an excellent idea to get a big name director on board. :hehe:

^I read that they are after Christopher Nolan now! Although that's probably just hyperbole...

I'd go so far as to call Silva the most menacing action movie villain this side of Heath Ledger’s Joker.

^He was a superb 'Bond baddie', the best in a long time - probably since Christopher Walken's 'Max Zorin'. For me though, he was still scarier as 'Chigurh' in No Country For Old Men. You have to have a bit of camp to hark back to those Bond glory days, and he straddled the eras brilliantly.

I don't know about your screening Michael*, but in mine (and without revealing too much) the biggest cheer of the night came at a garage door reveal... :D

I'm so jealous that you got to go to a screening!
