April 25, 200718 yr her interview with dutch avantgardetranslated by me so it's bad... did it very quickly hope u understand International Topmodel Doutzen Kroes (22) is booming. A couple of years ago she was just a schoolgirl, now she has a life of which the sex and the city girls would be jealous of. ‘I really enjoy my new freedom.’ Doutzen enters the studio and everybody’s excited. The visagist stops his conversation with the art director, de photographer stops with the sampleshots and the stylist takes a sprint to the clothes. Doutzen doesn’t notice the excitement. Until it’s ‘her turn’ for the shoot, she sits in a corner and reads some old magazines, eats a sandwich and a few slices of cucumber. Doutzen looks relaxed in her black horse riding boots, black wool shirtdress and matching headband. Not a trace of make up there. Here is a topmodel, but also a young, fashionable girl in the spring of her life. With a head full of dreams and ideals, which change almost everyday. ‘When I’m on a beautiful island, I want to start a hotel there. Or I want to start volunteering when I’m somewhere where people need help. Yeah, I hope to make the world a better place,’ Doutzen says. ‘Before I was discovered as a model, I wanted to go to the PABO (education to be a teacher) to become a teacher. Studying psychology was also appealing to me, but very soon the modeling went so good, it became obvious that I didn’t have to choose. I’ve thought about studying next to my job, but if I’m very honest, I don’t really want that anymore. I have so little time and I learn SO much on the work-floor that I really don’t want to cover my nose in books. I had to do the theory exam for my drivers license a little while ago and that was so hard for me. I just can’t do it anymore. Luckily I’ve made it immediately. My friends in Groningen do study. They worry about tests, the writing of scripts and have little money. But we still understand from each other what we’re doing. I haven’t lost my friends.’ Skinny models About girls who starve themselves to become a model Doutzen has a different opinion. ‘I think it only works in the wrong way when you keep on about those girls to be so skinny. A couple of articles in the papers and rules don’t change that. And yes, it’s terrible that there are so many skinny girls and those young girls take that as an example. I often see girls who frighten me. The fact that they’re an example is not acceptable. But I have to admit that I know, from experience, how this works. I too watch other girls and wonder ‘am I supposed to look like that?’ The pressure to be thinner is always there. Don’t all women have that? I have my but and boobs. Though I’m very happy with my butt and a lot of my clients too, there are designers who don’t think of it as an advantage. I notice I’m starting to care about that more and more. The first three years I said very firm: ‘this is who I am’. But the models around me are becoming thinner which makes it hard for me to keep saying that. But don’t worry, because I wouldn’t know how to get thinner. You can’t do anything about it, but as a model you become obsessed with food. With everything I eat I keep my eye on what it does to my body. I have to, for my job: when I become to fat and don’t take good care of myself it might cost me clients. I have to watch it. That’s why I try to eat as many biological food as possible, often go to a spa and run 10 km every three days. I love to run. With music on down the Hudson River in New York: that’s meditation for me. Homesickness ‘I’m not as homesick as I used to be in the beginning, because now I really have my own place in New York. My own house! Before I bought this house, I used to live in a model house at the Hudson and I’ve been so sad there. When friends from Holland left, I was crying on the street. Now it’s the opposite: when I’m in the Netherlands I’m really looking forward to go to New York. I hang out a lot with colleague models Anne Marie van Dijk and Mireille l’Amie. Together we’re like a Sex and the City club. In the Netherlands I didn’t watch it because I didn’t like it. Actually I discovered it in New York. Great! Now I watch the old series over and over again. The funny thing is that we walk around on the same locations as in the series. Sometimes we experience the same thing and then we say to each other ‘This is such a Sex and the City moment!’’ Happy Single I’m a huge flirt. When I go out and I don’t flirt that evening – or I’m not flirted with – I don’t like it. It has to stay flirting though. As soon as men come up to me I leave very quickly. Sometimes there’s a nice one and I do date, but I’m not looking for more. I’m happy on my own. Those men don’t have to call me because I really don’t want that. In New York there are so many wrong men who are used to models who only date when they get expensive presents, and very often they think I’m like that. Before this life on my own I had a four year relationship and I know how it’s like to be with two. It’s nice, but I really enjoy my new freedom. I’m actually in a very nice position: my ex Eddy are not really finished with each other. The fact that we broke up was a conscious choice. He wanted to study in the Netherlands and enjoy his student days, and I wanted to stay in New York. Besides: we are so young! We said to each other: Now is the time to do what we want. If we don’t let each other go, we’ll be married before we know it with a couple of kids. Then we’ve never experienced real freedom!’ We thought that it really shouldn’t be that way. So when I go to the Netherlands we have a great time, and when I’m back in New York, we have a great time apart from each other.’ Sven Kramer ‘I heard the rumors about my passionate relationship with Sven Kramer. I would have been with him during the Olympic Games. Head over heels we would be. And by the way we are also building our house. Apparently my tummy is watched very closely so the magazine’s are able to announce ‘Doutzen’s pregnant!’ Such crap. It’s really not true. Sven and I know each other from before. Ah well, ‘know’? We used to skate on the same track and sometimes went to the same parties. Because of our shared Frisian background I was ofcourse very proud when he won the Worldchampionship and to congratulate him with that, I texted him. Then we mailed a little and texted and that was it. The media made up a whole story about it. Now I hope we don’t run in to each other because then nobody will believe that we’re not having a thing.’ Laughing ‘I’ll ask him soon to ask whether our house is ready.’ New York, Paris and Amsterdam ‘I travel over the entire world. Yesterday I went out in Leeuwarden (capital of Friesland) and it was so much fun. In New York, Paris and Amsterdam you’re immediately in such a scene. Everybody’s watching each other and judging each others clothes, while in Leeuwarden all we do is dancing and laughing. I had no idea what was happening around me, because all I cared about was my friends. I prefer to go to a club so I can dance – I’m not a pub type of girl. In a club all I want to do is dance, unless I’m with my sister by the way. She’s such a good dancer that I would prefer to stay a couple of feet away from her. Next to her I’m invisible. My sister always laughs at me when I dance. She calls me a dancing little stick.’ Vodka, spring water and lemon ‘Actually I don’t have much time to go out. When I go, I’m often in bed at two. Then I still get to be there at the best time of the evening, because after that it becomes less fun. I’m very disciplined about that. I’m only being bad to myself when I wake up with a head like a balloon and huge circles under my eyes. My ideal drink? A mix of vodka, spring water and lemon, because it contains little calories and unnoticed you drink a lot of water. But more often I don’t drink at all. Especially when I have to work the next day. On a glass of water I can have a lot of fun!’ wow. thanks for this.
